Promote And Support The Development And Delivery Of A Rigorous, Contemporary Curriculum.
In support of this goal, we will collectively deliver a rigorous, contemporary curriculum to prepare our undergraduate students with the knowledge and skills to be a successful and highly employable individual within the victim studies workforce.
Objective
Competence In Oral Presentation Skills
As students near the completion of their undergraduate degree in Victim Studies, it is critical that they have developed strong communication skills. As such, our department will ensure that our students demonstrate competence in their oral presentation skills.
Indicator
Students Will Demonstrate Competence In Oral Communication Regarding Contemporary Victim Studies Topics
Undergraduate victim studies students will demonstrate oral communication competency in their required Problem Analysis in Victim Studies course (CRIJ 4398). Oral communication skills are scored using a common rubric developed and agreed upon by faculty. The following domains of the student's oral communication ability are considered: Clarity and Organization, Contact with Audience, Subject Knowledge, Use of Visual Aids, Mechanics, and Inclusion of Appropriate and Relevant Prior Research. The criteria used to assess this indicator is attached.
Criterion
Students Will Score At 70% Or Above On The Oral Presentation
Students will score at 70% or above on the Oral Presentation Scoring Rubric used in CRIJ 4398.
Finding
Majority Of Students Met Or Surpassed Goal.
40 students were enrolled in CRIJ 4398 for the Spring 2015 semester. This course was not offered in the Fall 2014 semester. 80% of students in this course received a 70% or higher on their oral presentation using the oral presentation scoring rubric in CRIJ 4398.
Objective
Competence In Scientific Writing Skills
As the next generation of individuals are developed for the victim studies workforce, it is increasingly apparent that employable candidates must be able to engage in scientific writing related to their field of study. In victim studies, job candidates are expected to demonstrate skills and abilities that would allow them to research topics and provide scientific summaries of knowledge gained during their research. While the specific aspects of any position will vary, our department will ensure that our students demonstrate competence in their scientific writing skills.
