Increase Department Visibility

To increase the exposure of the Department of Biological Sciences at SHSU to other institutions in Texas, the U.S. and globally

Increased Faculty And Student Participation In National/international Conferences

The faculty and students in the Department of Biology will increase participation at national and international conferences.

KPI

National/international Conference Participation

The change in number of faculty and students presenting at national and international conferences in the 2012 academic year to the 2013 academic year will be calculated. Our goal is to document an increase in number of presentations over time.

Result

National Conference Attendance

The number of presentations at national-level conferences increased by 5 from 2012-2013 review period (29 to 34, respectively).

Funding For National Conferences

The Department of Biological Sciences will make efficient use of resources to fund national/international conference presentation by students and facutly.

The faculty and students in the Department of Biology will increase participation at regional conferences.

The change in number of faculty and students presenting at regional conferences from 2012 academic year to the 2013 academic year will be calculated. Our goal is to document an increase in number of presentations over time.

Result

Regional Conference Presentations

The number of presentations at regional conferences increased by 13 from the 2012-2013 review periods (39 versus 52 presentations, respectively).

Funding For Regional Conferences

The Department of Biological Sciences will make efficient use of resources to fund participation by students and faculty at regional conferences.

Update to previous cycle's plan for continuous improvement Data have been collected from 2013 FES review.

Plan for continuous improvement Despite a small drop funding from 2012-2013 ($800), presentations continued to increase. Review priod was funded at $4000. We will use this increase to compare to previous findings. This strategy of increasing faculty and student support seems to promote conference attendance by both faculty and students, increasing our regional and national visibility. We will continue using creative budgetting to promote visibility of the Department of Biological Sciences.
