Increase candidate enrollment in Department of Library Science Programs.
Objective
Candidate Recruitment
Enrollment Services and the Office of Graduate Studies recruit candidates for graduate programs. The Library Science Department will support their efforts when faculty members attend national conferences to expand the Department's outreach beyond the State of Texas.
KPI
Candidate Recruitment
Enrollment of candidates in Library Science courses will increase by 5%.
The Library Science Department saw a decline in enrollment last academic year. Faculty members will be more active at conferences by recording the contact information of potential applicants to the program so follow up may be initiated to help the applicants through the application and registration processes.
Result
Recruitment Results
The number of graduate candidates enrolled in the Library Science program increased over the course of the 2013-2014 academic year. In Summer 2013 the program had 120 graduate candidates enrolled. By Summer 2014 enrollment in the program had increased to 146 graduate candidates, which is an increase of 22 percent.
During the 2013-2014 academic year, the department recruited at four regional conferences, three state conferences, and one international conference.
Action
Action Of Recruitment Of Candidates
Even though there was an increase of 22%, the department will continue to recruit in 2014-2015. The department's goal is to reach and maintain, at least, an enrollment of 175 candidates. Past recruiting venues have been successful. The department will continue recruiting at these venues and look for additional opportunities.
Goal
Cooperative Teaching And Learning Within College Of Education
Work in conjunction with other College of Education Departments to develop doctoral-level cooperative programs that enrich and enhance the studies of doctoral students who have a library science background.
Objective
Cooperative Teaching And Learning
Contact interested department leaders in the College of Education doctoral programs involved with literacy, leadership, and technology and collaborate on providing information about how the school librarian can assist in literacy learning, leading, and teaching.
KPI
Cooperative Teaching And Learning
After our success two years ago, the Department of Library Science is planning to collaborate with at least one additional cooperative doctoral program within the College of Education to support school librarians who are wanting to obtain a doctoral degree.
Result
Cooperative Teaching And Learning Result
The department's hope was that the Instructional Technology doctorate would be approved in time for interested candidates to become part of a library science cohort by Summer 2014. However, the Instructional technology doctorate has not successfully completed the approval process and is currently waiting for review after making the recommended changes.
Three Literacy doctoral students who are interested in a specialization in library science began the Literacy doctoral program Summer 2013. But as of this time, the department is unable to offer library science doctoral courses due to the low number of interested doctoral students.
Action
Cooperative Teaching And Learning Action
The department continues to receive inquiries into another Educational Leadership doctoral cohort, but there hasn't been enough to form a library science cohort.
Currently, there is one doctoral student in the Literacy doctoral program that has requested to take the library science doctoral courses.
With the approval of the changes to the Instructional Technology doctoral program proposal, the department foresees potential interest.
With the interest in these three different doctoral programs, there is a stronger possibility of the library science department working cooperatively with these programs and be able to offer library science doctoral courses for those interested in a specialization who are currently enrolled in these programs.
Goal
Faculty Excellence
Increase faculty excellence and scholarly productivity within the Department.
Objective
Scholarly Productivity
Faculty will engage in collaborative research, writing, and presentations.
KPI
Presentation Submission
Faculty will submit 1+ presentations at a professional conference. Last year, faculty members met this goal. The faculty members would like to maintain this goal for an additional year.
Result
Scholarly Productivity Results For Presentation
All faculty members have documented that their number of presentations met or exceeded the goal. Two faculty met the goal. Three faculty members exceeded the goal.
KPI
Manuscript Submission
Faculty will submit 2+ manuscripts for peer review and publication. Last year, faculty members met this goal with some outperforming others. The faculty members would like to maintain this goal for another year.
Result
Scholarly Productivity Results For Manuscript Submissions
The goal of 2+ manuscripts for peer review and publication was not met by all faculty members. Two faculty members did not meet the goal. One faculty member met the goal. Two faculty members exceeded the goal.
Action
Scholarly Productivity Action
Faculty members will continue to engage in collaborative research, writing, and presentations. The current performance indicator for presentation submissions will remain the same. The performance indicator for manuscript submission will be lowered to 1+ manuscript for peer review and publication to follow the department's policy regarding requirements for tenure-track faculty members.
Objective
Faculty Community
Provide opportunities for the Department of Library Science faculty to build professional collegiality and community.
KPI
Departmental Day
Since not all faculty members could meet every Monday, due to attendance at conferences and other similar obligations, a collective decision was made to cancel those faculty meetings if attendance needed to be at 100%. To help remedy this problem a decision was made to move to Tuesday for the designated day for faculty members to be present and meet in order to build professional community. Departmental meetings will be scheduled on Tuesday for this academic year. The goal is to have 80% of faculty members present at each meeting.
Result
Faculty Community Departmental Day Result
Last year during the course of the 2013-2014 academic year, faculty members were not present every Tuesday. Factors that contributed to this included attendance at conferences and other committee meetings on campus that conflicted with the departmental meeting. Faculty meetings were cancelled when two or more faculty members were projected to be absent. By following this plan, the department met the goal of having 80% in attendance at each faculty meeting.
Action
Faculty Community Departmental Day Action
Since the department has seen positive results in the attendance at the weekly department faculty meetings, the plan is to continue with this routine.
