New Student Orientation (Freshman, Transfer)

Goal
Maintain An Effective New Student Orientation Program For Students And Their Families
Plan and implement an effective New Student Orientation Program for incoming freshman and transfer students and their families.

Objective
Student/Family Satisfaction
Students and their families attending New Student Orientation will report having been assisted and satisfied with their transition into Sam Houston State.

KPI
New Student Orientation Evaluation
Students attending New Student Orientation will complete an evaluation.  The evaluation is on a Likert scale of a 4-point or 5-point scale.   The goal is to be rated higher than three (above average).  The evaluation will leave opportunities for comments in efforts to recieve positive criticism from those who've attended.

Result
New Student Orientation Program Success
Student and their families overall ratings of Orientation have been positive.  Evaluations are still being recieved however responses have exceeded our expectations of satisfaction.  Family members have said to feel more comfortable about sending their student to SHSU and younger siblings attending the Siblings Program have expressed interest in attending SHSU.

New Student Orientation Program Success - Continue
New Student Orientation will continue to measure the success of the program to meet the needs of SHSU students and their families.  Evaluations will continue to be sent upon completion of attending the program.

New Student Registration For Orientation
Continued from the previous year the goal is to improve a new registration process for Orientation.

Third- Party Software For Registration
A third-pary software program to manage new registration for Orientation will be chosen and implemented.

Registration Via Third-party Software
A third-party software will be researched and implemented to assist with registration and tracking of students attending New Student Orientation.

Result
Third-Party Software
Ressearch and discussion was done to update the current registration system for Orientation for the Summer 2014 season.  It was decided to make modifications to the system and use Ellucian Recruiter.  Ellucian Recruiter is expected to work with other areas within Enrollment Management including New Student Orientation.

Action
Third Party Software - Ellucian Recruiter
Ellucian Recruiter will be implemented in phases with Orientation Registration in the second phase in the Spring of 2015.  It is possible for Orientation to be on the legacy registration system for the Summer 2015 season if Recruiter is not completely implemented.

Online Orientation Update - Continued
Online Orientation will be revamped to increase user satisfaction.

Objective
Update & Satisfaction
New Student Orientation will recieve an update to the program and users will rate their satisfaction to the assessment above average in their transition to SHSU.

Satisfaction
Participants of the assessment will rank the online assessment above average and indicate its benefits in their transition to SHSU.

Result
Update Process
Online Orientation is still in the process of being updated.  Information from various departments across campus is being used to update the program so those students that have not yet attended an Orientation will recieve the most up-to-date information.  Student will have the full Fall Semester to complete the assessment.

Online Orientation will open sooner in the coming years and updates will be made periodically to avoid delay in opening assessment.

Additional Full-Time Staff Member
New Student Orientation Programs will added a full-time staff member to assist with meeting the needs of those students and their families transition to SHSU.

A Coordinator of New Student Orientation will be added to the New Student Orientation Program to assist the Director of New Student Orientation in the responsiblities of student staffing, implementing, planning of the program and other Orientation related projects.

Action
Additional Staff - Efficiency
Adding the Coordinator of New Student Orientation has made New Student Orientation Program function more efficiently.  Projects, responsiblities, and deadlines have been split between two full-time staff members as oppose to one.  The area will continue to benefit from going from a single full time staff member to having two full time staff members.


Update to previous cycle's plan for continuous improvement Monitoring the success of New Student Orientation will continue to be an area of focus.  This will allow us to ensure we are meeting the needs of both students and their families as they transition to SHSU.  In regards to our previous plan for continuious improvement we are in moving in the right direction in enhancing online orientation and using a more efficient registration system for Orientation.

Plan for continuous improvement Having a Coordinator of New Student Orientation will assist New Student Orientation Programs in being more efficient in not only implementing the program but enhancing the program.  We will continue to update online orientation on a regular basis while maintain the satisfication of both students and their families.
