New Student Orientation (Freshman, Transfer)

Goal
Effective New Student Orientation Program
Plan and implement an effective New Student Orientation program for incoming freshman and their parents/guests. 

Objective
Student-Family Satisfaction
Students attending New Student Orientation will report having been assisted and satisfied with their transition into Sam Houston State University community. 

KPI
New Student Orientation Evaluation
Incoming freshmen complete the evaluation. The evaluation has some 5-point Likert items and some 4-point Likert items.  Our goal is to be rated three or higher on a five-point scale.

Result
New Student Orientation Program Success
Students and families overall rating of Orientation was a sucess. Responses to satisfaction on averaged ranged from 3 - 5 with satisfaction of being prepared to attending or sending their student to SHSU.

Action
New Student Orientation Program Success - Continue
New Student Orientation Programs will continue to measure the success of the program to meet the needs of SHSU students and their families.  Surveys and evaluations will be continued to be used to measure the success.

Online Orientation Satisfaction
Online Orientation will be revamped in increase user satisfaction.

Objective
Increase User Satisfaction In Online Orientation
Users who navigate Online Orientation will report increased satisfaction with the process.

KPI
Online Orientation Satisfaction
After revamping the Online Orientation, users will rate their satisfaction as a "3" or higher on a five-point scale.

Result
Online Orientation Assessment On-Hold
The Online Orientation was not revamped to include video however is available for students to take the basic assessment. Students are encouraged to visit with New Student Orientation Programs to complete their assessment to receive materials distributed at Orientation that they may have missed. Goal will be moved forward to the 2013-2014 academic year.

The Online Orientation Assessment enhance and satisifcation goals will be continued to 2013 - 2014 goals.  Resources were not available to meet the goal.

New Registration For Orientation
The goal is to improve the new registration process for on-campus orientations.

Third-party Software For Registration
A third-party software program to manage new registration for Orientation will be chosen and implemented.

KPI
Registration Via Third-party Software
A third-party software program will be in place to manage new registration for Orientation by February, 2013.


Result
Third-Party Software
Research and discussion was done to update registration system for Orientation and use a third-party softeware. It was decided to continue the use of the legacy system and make modifications to fit the needs of the Orientation Program. Updates/modifications were made in a timely manner. A few glitches were found in the update however were handled as needed.

Action
Third-Party Software - Continue
The New Student Orientation legacy system will continue to be used for registration until further research can be conducted to determine which software would best fit the needs of our students and the insitution.



Update to previous cycle's plan for continuous improvement

We retried our efforts in tele-recruitment with no negative impact to New Student Orientation.  The following areas (comprehensive traning for orientation team and preparing students for college) will continue with reduced efforts so that we can continue to focus on our satisfaction efforts and other upcoming goals.


Plan for continuous improvement New Student Orientation programs will continue to monitor the success of the program and continue to research ways to enhance its Online Orientation Assessment for SHSU students.
