Programs that are eligible for accreditation from outside agencies will seek or renew accreditation. For 2012-2013, the goal is to obtain and complete the necessary paperwork for Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accreditation for the BSN in Nursing.

Result
Accreditation
We hosted the computer science accrediting agency ABET and responded to their concerns. Their final review was to accredit the BS in Computing Science until September 2015. We hosted the nursing accrediting agency Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN, formerly NLNAC) and responded to their concerns. We received notification of accreditation for five years on August 1, 2013. We hosted the Texas Board of Nursing site visit and responded to their concerns. We contracted with CCNE to visit in the fall of 2013 to review the nursing program and offer additional accreditation.

Action
Programs With Accreditation
We will examine the possibility for ABET accreditation of the programs in Industrial Science once they are approved for conversion to Engineering Technology. Computer Science is  implementing assessment for student learning outcomes identified as a concern in the ABET review.

Objective
Restructure College Curriculum Process

KPI
Percentage Of Graduate Students On Assistantship
The college will produce a TA report that includes at least 85% full time graduate students who are receiving assistantships in COAS

Result
Percent Of Full Time Students Supported By Assistantships
There are 157 full-time graduate students in the College of Sciences, 73 of whom are supported by TA/GA/RA positions (47%).

Action
Percentage Of Full-time Graduate Students On TA's
In FY 14, We will seek additional funding for Graduate Assistanships from the Office of Graduate Studies, external grants, and contracts. Our short-term goal is to raise the stipend amount for MS in Agriculture students to an amount similar to that in the remaining departments.

Objective
Provide Adequate Graduate Scholarships
The college will provide an adequate number of $1500 scholarships to assist in the recruitment and retention of high caliber graduate students. Due to low overall stipends and an inability to waive tuition, merit scholarships are needed to attract out-of-state and international students to graduate programs.

KPI
Percentage Of Graduate Students On Scholarship
The college will produce a report of at least 30 scholarship recipients that includes the percentage of full time graduate students who receive scholarships through the COS office

Result
Scholarships For Graduate Students
We funded 37 scholarships of $1500. Not all students received scholarships as they are awarded on a merit review.

Action
Scholarships For Graduate Students
The COS office of the dean will publicize to graduate programs and students the application materials and deadlines for the scholarships. International students must apply the first semester they are admitted to qualify for in-state tuition. A fundraising plan that addresses graduate student scholarships will be developed with assistance of the Advancement office.

Update to previous cycle's plan for continuous improvement We searched for multiple faculty in 2012-2013, with a continued focus on hiring faculty with terminal degrees from Research 1 level universities. We funded multiple faculty requests for travel support from several fund sources. We increased our visiibility with prominent news stories in the Heritage, on the University front page web site, and with the development of our own news channel on the College web page. We hosted ABET for reacccreditation of the Computer Science program and responded to their concerns. We hosted ANEC (formelry NLNAC) accreditation visit for the Nursing Program and responded to their concerns. We hosted the Texas Board of Nursing and responded to their concerns. We contracted with CCNE to visit in the fall of 2013 for accreditation. We began the process of preliminary authority approval for the PhD in Digital Forensics. We increased the number of graduate student assistantships in Chemistry by 4 students. We provided funding for graduate and undergraduate students to attend professional meetings to present their work.

Plan for continuous improvement Our faculty recruiting efforts will continue to be focused on national searches with extensive use of professional organization sites to attract faculty interested in the teacher-scholar model used at Sam Houston State. We must continue to invest in faculty start-up funds to attract quality research-capable faculty, particularly in the life and physical sciences. Our funding for travel has been sufficient to meet needs-we are assessing changes to distribution to enhance diversity of funded proposals. Visibiltiy of the college was greatly enhanced with the revision of the college web site and the addition of a full-time staff member who updates the website and writes/posts articles on the website. We will continue to encourage departments to submit ideas for stories to the University public relations department to promote our efforts. The two programs eligible for accreditation were successful in their efforts at reaccreditation (BS in Computing Science) and gaining initial accreditation (BS in Nursing). Computer Science is implementing assessment of student learning outcomes as required by ABET for interim review in 2014. As the Industrial Technology programs convert to Engineering Technology, we will develop a plan to pursue accreditation in these areas. Faculty and Department Chairs are informed of deadlines for curriculum proposals and these are screened and reviewed prior to submission to the University curriculum review process. Graduate student support was less than desired in terms of numbers but this was due to an increase in the amount per scholarship (went from $1000 to $1500) with a fixed budget. The percentage of full-time students on assistantships was less than desired. Additional funds from alumni/industry/grants are needed to get to the desired goal. in FY14, the college will develop a plan to request support for graduate students with support of the office of advancement.
