2011 - 2012

Spanish MA

Goal
Recruitment/Enrollment
FOL will actively recruit additional students for the Spanish MA to increase enrollments.

Objective
Recruitment Methods
FOL will publicize the Spanish MA via our FOL Website, Facebook site, informational posters and recruitment events.

KPI
Enrollment
Enrollment in the second year of the Spanish MA will grow by 50% from the initial enrollments of the first year via use of publicity.

Result
Enrollment And Publicity Efforts
While the website and word-of-mouth by current students brought applicants to us, participation in the Graduate School events did not seem to have much effect.

We did reach our goals and now have 42, with other pending, MA students.

At this point, we need at least two new tenure-track professors this coming year.  We have been approved for one position and may be approved for the second.

Another issue is lack of preparation with newly enrolled graduate students.

Action
Enrollment/Recruitment
We will be requesting one addition tenure-track position to manage the graduate MA program. We will encourage students who seem to be unprepared to see remediation through mentoring, tutoring, and visit centers such as the Writing Center. Our plan is to raise our admission standards to attract the more-prepared students.

Update to previous cycle's plan for continuous improvement

Plan for continuous improvement Our enrollments have increased enormously, initially beyond our preparation to meet the need. We are now offering at least four-five grad courses with at least one-two on-line, all limited-enrollments classes. We are authorized to hire two new tenure-track professors during 2012-13 to help meet the need.

We have found, however, that many (a majority?) of our students are not prepared for graduate work in tems of previous experience, especially in literary analysis skills. Their writing skills in English and Spanish are seriously lacking in many cases as well. We plan to raise admission standards.
