Health BS (Fitness)

Goal
Fitness And Wellness
Fitness and wellness concepts will be emphasized within the Health BS Fitness program.

Objective
Fitness For Living
Students in the Health BS Fitness program will be able to successfully demonstrate an understanding of physical conditioning in each of the five dimensions of health related physical fitness: 1) Aerobic capacity (cardiovascular fitness), 2) Body composition, 3) Flexibility, 4) Muscular strength, and 5) Muscular endurance.


Indicator
Fitness Plan
A common embedded portion of the KINE 2115 Fitness for Living assignments/exams will require students to demonstrate an understanding of physical conditioning in each of the five dimensions of health related physical fitness developed by the faculty.
1) Aerobic capacity (cardiovascular fitness)
2) Body composition
3) Flexibility
4) Muscular strength
5) Muscular endurance


Criterion
Fitness Plan Assessment
Ninety percent of students must score at least 75% correct on the common embedded exam assessing for understanding of the five dimensions of health related physical fitness. We are anxious to see if our interventions impact comprehension and application.


Finding
Fitness Plan Assessment
There were no Health Fitness majors enrolled in the Kinesiology 2115 Fitness for Living courses during the 2011-2012 academic year; therefore, no findings were assessed for these students.


Action
Fitness Plan Assessment
Although there were no Health Fitness majors enrolled in the Kinesiology 2115 Fitness for Living courses during the 2011-2012 academic year, the Health faculty realizes the importance of the Fitness Plan assignment. The assignment will remain as a program requirement for the Health Fitness majors.

Communication Skills
Communications skills will be emphasized in the Health BS Fitness program.

Objective
Effective Communication
Health BS Fitness students will be able to effectively communicate the role of the health educator as well as the skills required for that role.


Indicator
Oral And Written Communication Evaluation
Using a common rubric developed by the faculty, students will be required to write a two-page paper explaining the role of the health educator as well as the skills required for that role. 

Criterion
Communication Skills
Students must score 85 percent on the paper that describes the role of the health educator as well as the skills required for that role in the profession of Health Education.


Finding
Communication Skills
There were no Health Fitness majors enrolled in the Health 4387 Community Health course during the 2011-2012 academic year; therefore, no findings were assessed for these students.


Action
Communication Skills
Although there were no Health Fitness majors enrolled in the Health 4387 Community Health course during the 2011-2012 academic year, the Health faculty realizes the importance of the “Role of the Health Educator” assignment. The assignment will remain as a program requirement for the Health Fitness majors.

Ethical Behavior
The Health BS Fitness Program will emphasize ethical behavior

Objective
Ethical Conduct
Students in the Health BS Fitness Program will be able to define ethics and apply the Code of Ethics for the Health Education Profession into their professional development as a Health Educator.


Indicator
Ethical Assessment
As developed by the faculty, a common embedded portion of the HLTH 1360 course will require students to define ethics, morals, rights, and apply the Code of Ethics for the Health Education Profession. The Code of Ethics for the Health Profession was developed by the American Association for Health Education.


Criterion
Ethics
At least 90 percent of students must score at least 80 percent correct on the common embedded code of ethics tests and assignments. We have focused more on vocabulary development and application of ethical standards this year.  These were weaker areas identified last year.

Finding

There were no Health Fitness majors enrolled in the Health 1360 Introduction to Health Education course during the 2011-2012 academic year; therefore, no findings were assessed for these students.

The assignment will remain as a program requirement for the Health Fitness majors.



Update to previous cycle's plan for continuous improvement

Plan for continuous improvement There were five Health Fitness majors during the 2011-2012 academic year. All of the students had previously taken the Health 4387, Health 1360 and Kinesiology 2115 courses; therefore, no data was gathered on these assignments for these students. The Health program faculty values the importance of these program assignments and wants to maintain the assignments as criterion for program goals.
