2011 - 2012

Criminal Justice, CMIT

Goal
Recognized For Excellence - Texas Juvenile Probation Commission
Juvenile Probation/Supervision Officer Basic Training

Objective
Effective Training
Participants will be provided with effective training on topics mandated by the Texas Juvenile Justice Division (TJJD) to make them eligible for certification.

Indicator
Program Evaluations
Program evaluation performed right after a program.

Criterion
100% Passing Certification
All JPO/JSO participants will be provided evaluations at the end of each training session.  All participants will be provided a post test exam which demonstrates the standards necessary for certification.

Finding
Joint Training For Juvenile Probation/Supervision
Due to low attendance in January the training was cancelled. CMIT only had a November and April Class. Evaluations were given to all participants and a post exam. After reviewing the evaluations in which all participants met the standards for certification, it was observed that Juvenile Law was a very lengthy training for brand new JPO/JSO participants. Combining the two trainings was helpful for the JPO/JSO participants, allowed the participants to receive the training they needed for certification. Had the trainings been held separately, the training may have been cancelled due to low attendance.

Action
More Participation
Combining the Juvenile Probation/Supervision training brings the two departments together and allows them to receive training all at the same time and not having to attend alternate training at a later date.

In the future, we will have combined training for the two departments.

Goal
Recognized For Excellence - Mid-Management Leadership
Mid Management Leadership Program to be able to recognized excellence, provide leadership,  and windows of opportunity.

Objective
Assist Leadership Succession
Assist correctional agencies and departments in leadership succession by preparing personnel in supervisory and mid-management positions for greater responsibility through effective training utilizing the Mid Management Leadership program.

Indicator
Program Evaluations Performed After The Program
Participants will be able to give recommendations and evaluate the training.

Criterion
85% Of Participants Listing Knowledge Gained
Participants are provided evaluations on the last day of the training. Participants will list at least three areas in which they gained knowledge as a result of the training.

Finding
Mid Management For Corrections
The January 2012 class was the last Mid Management Class offered by CMIT until further notice. The trainer took another position. We were not able to measure this training. We are working on establishing curriculum for future Mid Management Trainings.

Action
Evaluate The Operations And Program
Discuss the current management and direction of the operations and programs.

Goal
Recognized For Excellence - CMIT's Annual Drug Conference
CMIT’s annual Drug Conference is a 20-hour certificate program offered to adult and juvenile probation officers, licensed chemical dependence counselors, law enforcement officers, and school security personnel to update and enhance their knowledge of drugs and their impact on their clientele.

Objective
Participants Gain Expertise About Drugs
Participants will be able to discuss an overview of major drug types and their properties; recognize symptoms of individuals under the influence of drugs; identify available treatments and issues surrounding counseling and rehabilitation; present up-to-date strategies for recognizing drugs popular among students and the methods used to hide them in their belongings and on their persons.

Indicator
Conference Evaluations
Participants will complete a conference evaluation measuring their perceptions of learning outcomes as a result of the conference.  The evaluation is a five-point Likert-type scale with 5 being the highest level. Participants are asked to rate the speaker and the applicability of the information discussed to their jobs.

Criterion
85% Of Participants Scoring 4's And 5's
The criterion will be that 85% of participants will choose 4's and 5's on the scale.

Finding
Drugs Conference
Daily evaluations were provided to the participants and as well as an overall evaluation of the conference.

Participants found the sections on Prescription for Disaster and View from the Bench the most applicable to their jobs.  The section rated least applicable was Addiction Essentials for the Probation World.  All presenters received an average of at least "4."  The highest rated presenter addressed the View from the Bench; the presenter with the lowest rating addressed Addiction Essentials for the Probation World.

Overall, participants rated the content as 4.48/5.00 and applicability as 4.43/5.00.  Thus, it appears that the areas presented were appreciated and largely applicable to participant jobs.

Comments to Consider:
The speaker presentations were too long.
Breaks needed to be incorporated into their presentations.
Lost the attention of the audience.

Action
Evaluation Of The Overall Drug Conference
Review the agenda and have breaks incorporated in order to not lose the attention of the participants. This will allow the participants to be more alert and eager to gain more knowledge. Continue to have updated information for the participants to incorporate on daily job duties.

We also need to review the content of the Addiction and Probation information as well as the presenter since this area and speaker received lower ratings on content and applicability.

Update to previous cycle's plan for continuous improvement

Plan for continuous improvement Correctional Management Institute of Texas will work on providing educational trainings towards the correctional field.  All Juvenile Probation and Juvenile Supervision Basic Officer Training will be held in Huntsville this coming year together in order for new JPO/JSO to receive their certification at the same time. Mid Management Leadership training will be offered through CMIT as soon as the department is able to create new curriculum and locate new instructors. The Project Coordinator who is over the Annual Drug Conference will evaluate the agenda, and add breaks into the break out sessions in order to allow participants to gain knowledge to take back to their departments.  Additionally we will review the area of addictions and probation to improve the ratings on content and applicability.
