2011 - 2012

Recreational Sports

Goal
Outdoor Recreation
Outdoor Recreation is designed to encourage students to engage in outdoor activities and work as a team.

Objective
May Trip To Hawaii Volcanos National Park
Students who take advantage of the May trip to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park will report participation:
1. increased self-esteem,
2. enhanced interpersonal relationships
3. involved learning at least one new skill.

KPI
Survey With StudentVoice
The indicator will be a survey with a Likert scale 1-5 with a place for comments for two of the items. Expectations are that 90% of participants will report positive experiences with the trip. We are especially interested in the self-esteem ratings improving from the 86% reporting improvement during 2010-2011.

Result
Hawaii Volcanoes Survey Results
According to the post trip evaluation conducted using StudentVoice, 94% of the participants reported that they had experienced some level of increased self-esteem.  The same survey found that 100% of participants fostered interpersonal relationships and learned at least one new skill. The criterion for this goal was having at least 90% report a positive experience. The findings for these three objectives average to just under 97%, thus exceeding the goal.

Action
Work On Self-esteem Objective
The Outdoor Recreation program will work on improving its scores in regards to self-esteem until 100% of participants report improved self-esteem.  The program will incorporate nightly debriefing activities into its trips to help facilitate self-esteem development.

Goal
Bearkat Camp
Freshmen students are encouraged to attend Bearkat Camp to learn of spirit and traditiions at SHSU.

Objective
Student Preparation For SHSU At Bearkat Camp
Students who attend Bearkat Camp will report being better prepared to be a student at SHSU, realized increased interpersonal relationships with fellow students, and have a better appreciation of university traditions.

KPI
StudentVoice Survey
At least 90% of participants will complete a survey regarding experiences at Bearkat Camp before their exit indicating better preparation to be SHSU students, increased interpersonal relationships, and appreciation of university traditions. Specifically, we want to determine if our interventions were effective for participants regarding better preparation to be SHSU students and increased interpersonal relationships, areas we viewed as weaknesses in 2010-2011.

KPI
Survey Results From Bearkat Camp
Results of the StudentVoice Survey are still being submitted, but as of the time of this report the following numbers are available:

97% of student agreed that participation in Bearkat Camp better prepared them for being a student at SHSU.

95% agreed that participation in Bearkat Camp fostered interpersonal relationships with other students.

100% of students strongly agreed that participation in Bearkat Camp increased their appreciation for university traditions.

Action
Bearkat Camp Improvements
Further qualitative investigations will be conducted to determine why more students didn't strongly agree that participation in Bearkat Camp better prepared them to be a student and fostered interpersonal relationships.  Some of the comments provided by students described the desire to have certain counselors more engaged with the participants.  These interactions will be examined and either personnel or policy will be altered to elicit a positive change.

Goal
Fitness
The overarching goal for Recreational Sports is to encourage physicial fitness.

Objective
Benefits Reported
Students who participate in fitness programs as part of Recreational Sports will report they have gained benefits from the programs.

KPI
StudentVoice Surveys
Surveys through StudentVoice will assess the various fitness programs. Due to a small sample size in 2010-2011, we are starting earlier to gather more responses and will leave our standard as 75% of participants will identify at least one benefit from participating in fitness programs provided by Recreational Sports.

Result
Fitness Program Benefits
A Studentvoice survey was conducted with participants in the Recreational Sports Fitness Program.  The results of the survey included 100% of respondents saw an increase in their level of physical activity; 94% of respondents experienced an increase in overall wellness; 89% of respondents experienced an increase in social connections; 100% of participants experienced an increase in self-esteem; and 100% of respondents experienced a reduction in their level of stress.

Action
Improvements To The Fitness Program
Based on the results of the Fitness Benefits Survey, improvements can be made by participants in the fitness program in the level of stress they reduced and the extent of social connections. Both metrics had a number of respondents replying they only experienced a slight rise in social connections and a slight reduction in stress levels.  The Department of Recreational Sports will examine the current fitness program offerings to determine how participation can increase social networking and further decrease stress.

More regular survey data will be collected from participants in the fitness program. While the numbers indicated that most of the participants in fitness classes were experiencing some form of benefits, a larger sample of participants will be needed to further analyze this aspect.

Based on the data obtained however, specific action for fitness will focus on increasing the level of fitness instructor/participant interaction, level of instructor training, and the number and type of fitness classes offered to increase student benefits.

Update to previous cycle's plan for continuous improvement

Plan for continuous improvement Recreational Sports learned through assessing its programs that the majority of its participants are receiving substantial benefits from the services the department offers.  Assessment always identifies areas for improvement.  Recreational Sports will conduct much more regular assessments of its program areas to ascertain not only participant satisfaction, but benefits as well.  In the Fitness program, more emphasis will be placed on instructor training, variety and number of classes offered and instructor/participant interaction to increase reported benefits through participation.  Bearkat Camp will review the findings of its survey and conduct a thorough policy and personnel review to seek better avenues for students and counselors to interact and foster interpersonal relationships. And finally, the outdoor program will develop training for its trip leaders on how to conduct nightly debriefing activities to help participants on their trips fully realize the benefits of participation.
