Money Management Center

Goal
Effective Personal Finance Outreach
The SMMC will provide personal finance outreach through classroom presentations and special programs to SHSU students.

Objective
Increase Student Knowledge Of Personal Finance
The Student Money Management Center will develop outreach activities that increase students’ knowledge of personal finance-related topics.

Indicator
Program Assessment Surveys
The program assessment results for specified activities will serve as evidence of the successful completion of this objective.

Criterion
Student Knowledge Increased Through Classroom Outreach
Students who attend classroom presentations and classroom workshops provided by the Student Money Management Center will increase their knowledge of specific personal finance topics by attending. At least 75% of students who attend classroom presentations and workshops will  indicate a specific piece of personal finance knowledge they learned by attending the program.  This will demonstrate the effectiveness of the Student Money Management Center’s outreach programming on student learning of personal finance topics.

Finding
Classroom Presentation Effectiveness
The overwhelming majority (approximately 99%) of student attendees were able to indicate at least one specific piece of information they learned by attending these sessions. Also, we found students indicated the SMMC has helped lower their debt and understand their finances better. These results clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the SMMC's outreach programming on student learning.

Criterion
Student Knowledge Increased Through Outreach Programming Events
At least 75% of students who attend Student Money Management Center provided outreach events such as Financial Literacy Week, and other monthly workshops, will  indicate a specific piece of personal finance knowledge they learned by attending the program.  This will demonstrate the effectiveness of the Student Money Management Center’s outreach programming on student learning of personal finance topics.

Finding
Outreach Effectiveness
The overwhelming majority (approximately 99%) of student attendees were able to indicate at least one specific piece of information they learned by attending these sessions. These results clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the SMMC's outreach programming on student learning.

Action
New Effective Programming
Though the results indicated a high level of effectiveness on student learning in our current programming, a weakness emerged in that there are many more personal finance topics which the SMMC did not provide programming and education. In an effort to provide more student learning opportunities and increase the overall effectiveness of the SMMC and it’s educational programming efforts on student learning, the SMMC will develop suggestion cards that will be given to student attendees at SMMC sponsored events. This is an effort to solicit ideas from the student body concerning topics they wish to learn that we do not currently offer.

Goal
Effective Personal Finance Counseling Services
The SMMC will provide effective personal finance counseling services to SHSU students.

Objective
Increase Student Knowledge During Consultations
The Student Money Management Center's personal one-on-one counseling sessions will increase students' knowledge of personal finance related topics.

Indicator
Consultation Survey
The consultation assessment results will serve as evidence of the successful completion of this objective.

Criterion
Student Knowledge Increased Through Counseling Consultations
At least 75% of students will be able to name at least one personal finance topic they learned during their one-on-one consultation with Money Management Center financial counselors.  This will demonstrate the effectiveness of the Center's consultations on student learning.

Finding
Counseling Effectiveness
100% of students who completed the survey was able to name one thing that they learned during the session, and all indicated they would recommend this service to others, as well as schedule another consultation. However, a weakness emerged in that only 9 of the 120 students counseled completed the survey instrument.  Due to the small sample size, the data may be skewed.

Action
Increase Survey Distribution
The SMMC will create a new policy and procedure to be added to the SMMC’s policy and procedure manual, which will outline the process for consultation survey distribution.  Also, new training will be provided to all SMMC counselors on the flow of consultations which includes distributing the consultation survey at the end of the consultation, as well as the need for and importance of immediate assessment.  This should help increase the survey sample size in the future and allow for more accurate results.

Update to previous cycle's plan for continuous improvement

Plan for continuous improvement As a result of the outreach and classroom presentations, the majority of students who attended were able to indicate at least one specific piece of information they learned by attending.  However a weakness emerged in that the SMMC is not providing programming that covers every personal finance topic, and therefore overall student learning of personal finance needs improvement.  Due to these findings, the SMMC will develop suggestion cards for students to provide ideas and topics they wish to learn that the SMMC does not currently provide.  This will increase the overall effectiveness of the SMMC on student learning through outreach and classroom presentation channels.

In regards to the SMMC's objective to increase student learning of personal finance topics through its one-on-one consultation services, in the future the SMMC will create a new policy and procedure concerning administering immediate assessment following consultations with students.  This as well as increased training of counselors on the policies of the SMMC should alleviate the low assessment completion rate for one-on-one consultation surveys.  More accurate assessment which includes the vast majority of student consultation participants will provide the SMMC with a better view of its effectiveness on student learning through the one-on-one consultations.
