Market, recruit and retain high quality students.

Targeted recruiting efforts for Scholar/Athlete/Leaders using Army and University resources. Provide a marketing strategy that reaches high schools, prior and current military service members, community colleges, and SHSU students.  We will support the newly created Veteran's Resource Center on campus.  We will include our website, the availability of the Veteran's Resource Center and outreach to Active Duty soldiers as part of our marketing, advertising and information strategies.

KPI

Action
Recruiting/Marketing
We exceeded our expectations in all three areas.  Our targets for 2012-2013 will be 120 students enrolled, 45 career fairs, and 35 community and university related events.  Since the Cadet Command does not require community service events, we are leaving the target at 35, a reasonable expectation for us.

Goal
Leadership Development
Develop basic and advanced leadership skills among all Cadets.

Objective
Leadership Development
Cadets will learn basic and advanced leadership skills as they progress throughout school. Leadership responsibilities will increase as the Cadets progress from freshman to senior year.  We will maximize the use of professional online leader development forums.  This will connect Cadets with Lieutenants serving throughout the world as well as with Cadets from the United States Military Academy and ROTC programs throughout the country.

Indicator
Leader Development/Training
Cadets are required to complete off-campus training programs, including the Leadership Development and Assessment Course (LDAC), and a degree plan that places extensive classroom emphasis on leadership.

Criterion
Leadership Training Opportunities
The degree plan and course content as well as off-campus training programs will meet the standards and requirements dictated by the US Army. The Department of Military Science will develop and implement a supplemental leadership training initiative.

Finding
Leadership Development
Our degree plan and training programs met the standards and requirements dictated by the US Army.  Our leadership training initiatives incorporate the use of MILSPACE, and online Platoon Leader forum in which our Cadets participate along with Cadets from the United States Military Academy at West Point.  An alumna 1LT Hollian Woods returned to campus to discuss corporate and Reserve experiences.

Action
Leadership Development
We found our guest speaker, 1LT Hollian Woods, so effective that our goal will be to have at least one of our alumni return each year to share experiences.

Goal
Graduation And Commissioning
Coach, teach and mentor Cadets in order to graduate and commission.

Objective
Commissioning
All Seniors will graduate from the university and commission as outstanding officers into the Army.

KPI
Commission Mission
The number of Cadets commissioned must be equal to or greater than the Army's expectation of 18.  We will commission a minimum of 18 officers IAW Army commissioning mission.

Result
Commission Mission
We met the Commission Mission goal of 18.

KPI
Graduation
Graduate all Senior Cadets in order to meet commission mission.  We will monitor Cadet progress in order for them to meet graduation requirements.  Methods will include active involvement in instruction, visiting students' classes outside of Military Science, and referring students to the SAM Center and other campus resources when appropriate.

Result
Graduation
Student grades and absences were closely tracked in all courses taken by each Cadet.  Cadets not demonstrating sufficient academic progress were identified as being "At Risk", counseled by their Military Science instructor, and provided with the resources necessary to improve their academic progress.  All Cadets were required to attend and complete the Study Skills course offered through the SAM center.

Action
Graduation And Commissioning
We will adopt the Army's commissioning minimum set for 2012-2013.  We will identify at-risk students and provide them with mentoring to meet our goal of graduating all senior cadets.

Goal
Faculty/Staff Development
Continue to work together as a team.

Objective
Faculty/Staff Development
Maintain a faculty and staff who actively support the standards set by the US Army and contribute to the training of current and future Army men and women.

KPI

The Department of Military Science will award faculty/staff for outstanding performance. Additionally, we will encourage faculty and staff to take advantage of at least one professional development opportunity.

Update to previous cycle's plan for continuous improvement

Plan for continuous improvement We were extremely happy that we met and exceeded our expectations in all four areas (enrollment/recruitment, leadership development, graduation and commissioning, and faculty/staff development) for 2011-2012.  For 2012-2013, we will raise our enrollment and marketing efforts. We will not raise the community service events goal because we believe 2011-2012 may have been an anomaly. The alumna's presentation was so effective that we wish to have at least one member of our military science alumni visit each year to discuss leadership. The Army's commissioning goal will be our goal. Military Science will award faculty and staff for outstanding performance.  Students identified as at-risk will be directed to the mentoring center for support and to develop skills related to academic success.  Our goal is to graduate all senior cadets.
