Goal
To Further Excellence In Teaching
The College of Arts and Sciences will provide the resources,support, and mechanisms to assist departments a nd faculty in their efforts to improve teaching throughout the college curriculum.

Objective
Recruit Highly Credentialed Faculty
The college will strive to hire faculty who possess the terminal degree from R1 universities.

KPI
Highly Credentialed Faculty
New faculty hires will possess the terminal degree from R1 institutions.  Our goal is to have 80% of new faculty with terminal degrees and from research universities.

Quality Faculty
10 faculty were hired this past year, all with terminal degrees (no ABD). 8 were from R1 universities, with one of the other two from a non-US university and the other from a specialized doctoral granting institution.

Goal
To Promote Excellence In Creative Activities And Research
The College of Arts and Sciences will provide the resources and support to facilitate scientific inquiry and artistic expression among faculty and students in the college.

Objective
Provide Appropriate Faculty Travel Funds
The college will solicit travel requests from faculty members, then request, acquire and allocate appropriate funding for proposed travel.

The college will solicit travel requests from faculty members, prioritize these requests, and acquire the necessary funds to facilitate the research and developmental goals of the faculty. Our goal is to approve 75% of the requests.

The departments in COS requested approximately $54,752 in faculty travel funds from the Dean of Sciences. Total travel allocations were $54,752 for a 100% funding rate.

The College of Sciences will fund undergraduate student travel to accompany faculty on research trips in the following year.

Goal
To Bring Visibility To Programs In The College
The College of Arts and Sciences will actively publish faculty and student accomplishments through local and national media and increase public exposure to scholarly and artistic events on campus.

Visibility
The College of Sciences will publicize research and creative accomplishments of faculty and departments in the Heritage magazine, on the website, and in other publications.

KPI
Visibility
Publication of research and creative accomplishments in journals, newsletters, and on websites. We hope to have a combination of 10 articles combined on the University website and in Heritage Magazine.

Visibility
The College of Sciences was featured in the Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 Heritage magazine, and the Heritage had 7 articles on the College. The College was featured prominently in the Spring 2012 as the cover page focus article. The university website has had 35 articles about the science faculty accomplishments or student accomplishments.

The College of Sciences will focus outreach efforts on nursing and the revise the college website in the following year.

To Provide A Rigorous, Current Curriculum
The College of Arts and Sciences will encourage the development of new programs that reflect discpline specific and societal changes. The College will adhere to a formal, rigorous curriculum review process.

Accreditation Of Programs
The college will identify all programs that are eligible for accreditation through professional organizations and initiate the accreditation or reaccreditation in each case.

Program Accreditation
Programs that are eligible for accreditation from outside agencies will seek or renew accreditation. This objective will be deemed successful if the result is accreditation.

The program in Computing Science is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). The Nursing program began developing the documents necessary to seek accreditation by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

The Department of Nursing will work towards obtaining accreditation from an outside agency.

Objective
Restructure College Curriculum Process
The college will establish fixed deadlines for submission of materials to the college curriculum committee and review items thoroughly in a timely manner.

College Curriculum Calendar
The calendar for the college curriculum process will be modified and strictly enforced. Goal is that all proposals will be submitted by the deadline.

The deadline for the curriculum calendar was transmitted to all department chairs. All proposals were submitted to the college curriculum committee by this deadline.

Approval Of Submitted Curriculum Proposals
Curriculum proposals approved by the COAS committee will be approved by the University curriculum committee.

Approval Of Curriculum Proposals
The proposal for a BS in Biomedical Science degree was approved by the University Curriculum committee. Five courses in Computer Science supporting an Education program in Technology were not approved.

Curriculum
We will work on a new doctoral degree program in Digital Forensics and collaborate on the curriculum for a new PhD degree in Criminal Justice in Forensic Science. The technology courses will be revised until they are approved by the University Curriculum Committee.

To Enhance The Quality Of Graduate Programs In The College
The College of Arts and Sciences will provide resources, planning and direction that will assist departments in growing quality graduate programs.

Objective
Provide Adequate Graduate Scholarships
The college will provide an adequate number of $1500 scholarships to assist in the recruitment and retention of high caliber graduate students.

Percentage Of Graduate Students On Scholarship
The college will produce a report of scholarship recipients that includes the percentage of full time graduate students who receive scholarships through the COS office. At least 50 scholarships will be given per year.

We funded approximately 53 graduate students through scholarships.

Action
Scholarships
We encourage all grant writers to include full funding of scholarships and tuition in all externally funded grant applications. Additional funding is sought from alumni, outside agencies, and donors.

Objective
Provide Adequate Assistantships For Graduate Students
The college will allocate competitive assistantships in a manner that allows each program to recruit the quality and quantity of graduate students necessary to offer a viable graduate program.

KPI
Percentage Of Graduate Students On Assistantship
The college will produce a TA report that includes the percentage of full time graduate students who are receiving assistantships in COS. The goal is that 85 graduate students will be awarded assistantships.

Assistantships
We funded 79 of our full-time graduate students with assistantships. This is very close to our goal. We added 4 new assistantships this year. We also raised the amount of money for stipends in 3 departments.

We will be seeking additional funding for new graduate assistantships in Chemistry for the following year.


Update to previous cycle's plan for continuous improvement

Plan for continuous improvement All new faculty hired possessed the terminal degree, with 80% having the degree from U.S. Research Universities. We maintained a high level of funding for travel for graduate faculty and graduate We had a high visibility in university publications and will focus efforts on nursing in the next year. We will  make whatever adjustments necessary to retain accreditation by ABET in computing sciences and seek accreditation in Nursing. Curriculum efforts are focused on new PhD program in Digital Forensics. Graduate student scholarships will be increased through grant and external funding and additional assistantships through university and external funding. Additionally, we will work to provide funding for students to be able to accompany faculty to professional conferences. Our efforts to hire faculty from research universities is ongoing.  We are always seeking ways to promote the college and its programs. Finally, we are seeking assistantships for graduate students in Chemistry.
