2011 - 2012

Foreign Languages, Department Of

Goal
Teaching Proficiency
FOL faculty will focus on teaching proficiency.

Objective
Teaching Proficiency
Faculty will improve teaching proficiency.

KPI
IDEA Evaluations
Faculty will participate in IDEA Evaluations for each class each semester. All summary ratings will be in the mid-range, 45-55.

Result
IDEA Scores
Basically, three faculty members, two pool and one tenured, consistently do not meet the mid-range, though two pool faculty members have raised one each of their three classes. They have worked with PACE more than one semester. One has not been offered another contract; another may not be offered another contract after this fall. The third is tenured. Another tenured instructor usually has one class per semester which does not meet the standard and has worked with PACE.

KPI
Common Required Student Achievement Tasks
Faculty will explore use of common required student achievement tasks for multi-section courses based on level and content of course. Common student proficiencies will be generated across all of the first four language classes.

Result
Proficiency Tasks
this will begin fall 2012.

Action
Mid-range Rating
Those FOL faculty whose IDEA evaluation of course(s) do not reflect mid-range rating or better will participate in PACE intervention the next semester after the rating.

Ratings for such courses will reflect mid-range rating or better for that next semester after the rating (concurrent semester with intervention).

Action
Proficiency Tasks By Level
A limited number of student proficiency tasks by level will be designed via meetings of the entire FOL faculty and smaller groups of faculty during the semester for adoption for the fall 2012.

Goal
Spanish Undergraduate Major Evaluation
The Spanish undergraduate major will be evaluated via graduating majors' input.

Objective
Student Input
FOL will collect input about student experience in FOL via a questionnaire every semester.

KPI
Questionnaire Collection
All graduating majors will return a completed questionnaire every semester. Students will rate improvement of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and culture at a minimum score of 3 of 5 or higher.

Result
Number Of Questionnaires Received By Semester
There is difficulty when one graduating major maximum does not return a questionnaire many semesters in spite of repeated exhortations.

Action
Questionnaire Evaluation
We are now officially blocking graduation for those who do not complete all department requrements.

We will be gathering data for four years in order for comparison of ratings before and after the common capstone evaluation.  This is our first year.

Update to previous cycle's plan for continuous improvement

Plan for continuous improvement Any faculty member who has not met mid-range in even one class has participated, at least once in PACE intervention. However, several who have several low scores have participated in intervention repeatedly with minimal results. We are moving to not offer new contracts to any pool faculty in this situation and are considering how to deal with the single tenured member.

We need to maximize publicity in terms of department requirements for graduating majors and block graduation for those who do not meet them in a timely manner.
