Career Services - Student Recruitment/Retention Support And Graduate Success Programs
Provide support programs to align with University and Division of Enrollment Management's goals of quality student recruitment, retention and graduate success.

Objective
Early Major/Career Choice Identification
Career Services will provide support to enable students to identify a major/career path their first academic year.

Collaboration with the Office of Student Success Initiatives, New Student Orientation and the SAM Center to initiate programs to encourage early identification of major and/or career path choice.

Choosing A Major Fair Was Held November 2, 210
A new program, the Choosing a Majors Fair was added on November 2, 2010.  This program was a collaborative effort of the Career Center, the First Year Experience Office and Academic Affairs.   All academic departments registered to attend this event.

Student Evaluations Of The SHSU Choosing A Major Fair Indicated The Event Met Their Objectives For Attending
A student survey was distributed to students as they left the Choosing a Major Fair and collected for a 96% return rate. 

88% of the students who attended the Choosing a Major Fair indicated that the event had met their objectives for attending.


Action
Choosing A Major Fair Will Become An Annual Event
A new program, the Choosing a Majors Fair, added on November 2, 2010 will become an annual event and is scheduled for November 1, 2011.

Increase Awareness And Participation In Student Employment Opportunities
Increase both on-campus employers and students' awareness and participation in Student Employment opportunities for both Work-study and Student Assistant positions.

Student Employment Posting Policy Will Be Implemented
Through the assistance and direction of the SHSU Human Resources Department, a policy requiring all on-campus jobs to be posted in one location will be approved by the Administration.

The SHSU Human Resources Department will draft a policy requiring all student employment opportunities will be posted in one central location to promote EEO initiatives, increase the visibility of available jobs on campus, and to streamline the posting, application, and hiring process.

Student Employment Posting Policy Was Approved And Posted
During the Spring 2011 semester, SHSU Department of Human Resources approved and published the Student Employment Posting Policy E-37 which requires all on-campus jobs to be posted in the Career Services Jobs for Kats online program.

Action
Student Employment Posting Policy Will Be Enforced Beginning September 1, 2011.
The Student Employment Posting Policy, though already approved and posted by SHSU Department of Human Resources, will be enforced starting September 1, 2011.  SHSU Career Services has held training workshops for both prospective student employees and on-campus hiring departments throughout the summer 2011 terms on the topics of posting and finding student employment opportunities and will  host regularly scheduled workshops on these topics at the beginning of each fall and spring semester.

Continue to increase Career Services staff as funding allows, while retaining current staff and proving training and professional development opportunities.

Addition Of A Career Counselor Position To Staff
Career Services will hire an additional Career Counselor who will be responsible for providing career advising/counseling, interpreting career assessments, and facilitating career education and development workshops.

New Career Counselor Position Posted
Funding for the addition of another career counselor position was approved and SHSU Human Resources posted the position on July 14, 2011. 


Action
Hiring A Career Counselor Is Delayed
The Career Counselor position is posted and applications are being received as this report is being submitted.  Interviews will be held in August 2011 so the new counselor will be hired and on staff by the start of the Fall 2011 semester.

Staff Training And Professional Development
Career Services will provide training and professional development opportunities and encourage staff to attend these programs throughout the 2010-2011 academic year.

Staff Participation In Training And Professional Development
Career Services staff submits registrations and, if necessary, travel applications to attend training and professional development programs and events.

Participation Level Of Career Services Staff Attending Training And Professional Development Events
100% of the Career Services staff will attend at least one training or professional development program or event during the 2010-2011 academic year.

All seven of the Career Services staff members attended at least one professional development conference, webinar, workshop, and Banner training.

All staff, as our budget allows, will attend at least one professional development program during the next academic year.

Enhance Career Services' Technology
Improve access to Career Services, delivery of its services and programs, and incorporate graduate success assessments through enhanced technology applications.

Enhance Career Services Web Site
Career Services' web site will be enhanced with the planned addition of new pages featuring updated resume samples; increased number of recommended job search web links; video tutorials to assist students and employers in utilizing the "Jobs for Kats" program; and pages for a "Virtual Career Center" for SHSU online or distance learners.

Department's pages are updated and enhanced through the assistance of SHSU Computer Services to include updated resume samples; "Jobs for Kats" tutorial video; and a "Virtual Career Center" page.

The website updates will be completed by August 31, 2011 before the start of the Fall Semester.

Finding
Career Services Web Pages Still Under Development
At the time of this report, work has not been completed on the Career Services web pages including the Virtual Career Center page for our distance learners.  This will be completed by Fall 2011.

Action
Work On Updating And Adding New Services To Website Continuing
The Enrollment Management marketing coordinator is working on the final draft of a web-based video of a Job for Kats User Tutorial which will be added by the Fall 2011 Semester.

The draft pages for the Virtual Career Center are also in their draft form at this time (July 15, 2011) but will be completed by the Fall 2011 Semester.

Career Services - Program Development
Demonstrate continuous improvement in program development/enhancement in Career Services.

Objective
Career Services Will Add To And Enhance Career-related On-campus Programs And Events.
Using last year's events and programs as a benchmark, Career Services will have added and/or enhanced on-campus events designed to benefit students and alumni.

Planned new career-related programs and events on campus are actually implemented during the 2010-2011 academic year.

Finding
Five Major New Events Were Implemented
New Events:  Major Fair 11/2/2010, the Learning to Lead Workshop on January 26, 2011, the Mock Interview Day, on February 3, 2011, and the "Body Language Communication program on February 10, 2011 and the Pink Slip Party on April 4, 2011.       

Action
Most Of The New Programs Will Be Added To The Yearly Calendar
Most of the new career related events will be added to our next year's calendar.  The Pink Slip Party will not be repeated and the Body Talk Communication program will be replaced with another similar professional development program.



Update to previous cycle's plan for continuous improvement

Plan for continuous improvement SHSU Career Services added five new programs to its list of services, most of which will be held on an annual basis.  Due to increased demand and student participation in career counseling/education services, an addition career counselor staff position will be added as the Academic Year 2010-2011 draws to a close.  Current staff participated in numerous staff development programs and will do so to keep current regarding employment and hiring trends, career counseling techniques, and general office procedures.   The Career Services website will feature a Virtual Career Center page to better serve our distance and online learners.  Finally, after many years of petitioning that a central job posting location is established on campus, the SHSU Administration and Human Resources Department approved a Job Posting Policy which will address prior concerns about EEO issues, and job visibility on campus.
