2010 - 2011

Industrial Technology BS (Design And Development)

Goal
Develop Knowledge And Skills
Students will develop knowledge and skills relevant to Design and Development.

Objective
Development Of Students' Knowledge And Skill
Students will be required to demonstrate competency in key areas of Design and Development.

Indicator
Advanced Design And Development Course Rubric
All students enrolled in the program are required to complete the Advanced Design course. Each semester seven randomly selected student assignments from the Advanced Design course will be reviewed by faculty members with expertise in the field.  Faculty members will score the assignments using a scale of 1 - 5 with 3 "meets expectations," 4 "exceeds expectations," and 5 "far exceeds expectations."

Criterion
At Least 70% Meeting Expectations
There will be a general consensus among I T Faculty members that at least 70% of the students enrolled in the advanced production course will perform at an acceptable level with a score of 3 (meets standards) or higher.

Finding
Design Outcome
On average, students scored a 3.8 on their Design and Development projects.  Even though the goal was obtained and over 70% of the students demonstrated success, faculty identified a weakness in drafting skill with little creativity.  The student designs were above average; however, they lacked detail.

Action
Design Program Assessment
A new faculty member taught the assessed class and though his knowledge for drafting is exceptional, modifications in project expectations will be to emphasis creativity in drafting and detail.

Faculty experience in the classroom will enhance expectations and student outcomes.

Goal
Develop Professional Skills
Students will learn the skills necessary to compete in the professional marketplace.

Objective
Demonstrate Professional Skills
Students completing the BS in Design and Development will demonstrate skills necessary to compete in the professional marketplace through an internship.

Indicator
I T 490 Internship Evaluation
All students enrolled in the program must complete I T 490 in their final year of enrollment. I T 490 addresses key concepts and skills relevant to the field of design. Each semester interns will be evaluated by their internship supervisor and by their faculty supervisor on a faculty-developed rating scale.

Criterion
70% Meeting Expectations
There will be a general consensus among I T Faculty members who review both university and internship supervisor assessments that at least 70% of the students enrolled in I T 490 demonstrated an acceptable level of performance on the rating scales.

Finding
Student Internship
Design students achieved excellent reports from their supervisors with no weaknesses identified from faculty and supervisor evaluations.

Action
Internship
Though student participation is low, student success in Design and Development is exceptional.  Faculty will continue to require internships; however, expectations will be increased.

Update to previous cycle's plan for continuous improvement

Plan for continuous improvement Students have excelled in internships, and expectations will be reassessed next academic year.  Faculty experience with teaching the design course will be improved, and student outcomes will be expected to improve.
