Fitness and wellness concepts will be emphasized within the Health BS Fitness program.

Objective
Fitness For Living
Students in the Health BS Fitness program will be able to demonstrate an understanding of physical conditioning in each of the five dimensions of health related physical fitness: 1) Aerobic capacity (cardiovascular fitness), 2) Body composition, 3) Flexibility, 4) Muscular strength, and 5) Muscular endurance.

Indicator
Fitness Plan
A common embedded portion of the Fitness for Living (215)  assignments/exams will require students to demonstrate an understanding of physical conditioning in each of the five dimensions of health related physical fitness developed by the faculty.
1) Aerobic capacity (cardiovascular fitness)
2) Body composition
3) Flexibility
4) Muscular strength
5) Muscular endurance

Criterion
Fitness Plan Assessment
Student must score at least 70% correct on the common embedded exam assessing for understanding of the five dimensions of health related physical fitness.

Finding
Fitness And Wellness
85% of the students met the target of 70% mastery on the exam assessing for understanding of the five dimensions of health related to physical fitness. 10% of the students exceeded the target and 5% of the students failed to meet the target.

Action
Fitness And Wellness
After a review of the findings, the faculty identified the following weaknesses in the students work related to the five dimensions of health related to physical fitness. 5% of the students did not demonstrate mastery. Emerging weaknesses in the students work were failure to comprehend and apply content, which is similar to the weaknesses identified last year. Therefore, all core health classes will have at least two faculty-developed assessments to address these weaker areas. Since this was our solution last year, we will have to redouble our efforts in the content areas.

Goal
Communication Skills
Communications skills will be emphasized in the Health BS Fitness program.

Objective
Effective Communication
Health BS Fitness students will be able to communicate effectively the role of the health educator as well as the skills required for that role.

Indicator
Oral And Written Communication Evaluation
Using a common rubric developed by the faculty, students will be required to write a two-page paper explaining the role of the health educator as well as the skills required for that role.

Criterion
Communication Skills
Students must communicate effectively the role of the health educator as well as the skills required for that role in the common embedded written paper assignment.

Finding
Communication
75% of the students met the target of effectively communicating his/her philosophy of a health educator. 20% of the students exceeded the target and 5% of the students did meet the target.

Action
Communication
After a review of the findings, the faculty identified the following weaknesses in the students work related to communication. 5% of the students did not demonstrate mastery of communicating effectively his/her philosophy of health education. All core health classes will have at least three faculty-developed assessments related to effective communication. Assessments will focus on mechanics, grammar, sentence structure, and basic presentation. These were the same weaknesses as last year.  We will need to intensify our efforts in these areas.

Goal
Ethical Behavior
The Health BS Fitness Program will emphasize ethical behavior

Objective
Ethical Conduct
Students in the Health BS Fitness Program will be able to define ethics and apply the Code of Ethics for the Health Education Profession.

Indicator
Ethical Assessment
As developed by the faculty, a common embedded portion of the HED 160 course will require students to define code of ethics and apply the Code of Ethics for the Health Education Professor. The Code of Ethics for the Health Profession was developed by the American Public Health Association.

Criterion
Ethics
Students must score at least 80% correct on the common embedded code of ethics tests and assignments.

Finding
Ethical Behavior
80% of the students met the 80% target on the common embedded code of ethics projects and exams. 15% of the students exceeded the target and 5% of the students did not meet the target of 80%.

Action
Ethics
After a review of the findings, the faculty identified the following weaknesses in the students work related to ethical behavior. 5% of the students did not meet the target set for this objective; therefore, the faculty have decided to increase the number of required embedded code of ethics for the health education profession assignments/exams. All core health classes will have at least three faculty-developed assessments related to health education profession code of ethics. Last year, the results indicated vocabulary development and application of ethical standards had been problematic, and 10% failed to reach the target goal.  This year, the percentage was less at 5%.

Update to previous cycle's plan for continuous improvement

Plan for continuous improvement A review of last year's and this year's findings must note that not all students are reaching expected standards. In an effort to address these deficits, the program faculty have opted to increase the number of required embedded tasks to assist all students with achieving the target outcomes. All core health classes will have at least three faculty-developed assessments related to fitness and wellness, communication skills, and code of ethics designed to address the weaknesses identified.
