Educator Preparation Services

Goal
Quality Educator Preparation Services
Provide services, including advisement, application assistance, field experience assignments, practice and application for TExES Exam, and areas related to NCATE, to students pursuing initial teacher certfication.

Objective
Practice Examination
Provide effective communication of representative form/practice examination information (including exam pre-requisites, exam schedule, registration direction, and exam results) to support student preparation for state certification exams.

PRACTICE EXAMINATION
EPS was pleased with the increase in the ratings of this area of service, however, it is still below the goal of 4.2.  It is believed the improvement is at least partially due to it being the second year of the practice examination being administered by the SHSU Testing Center, and experience has helped the process go smoother.  A testing fee increase from $8 to $15 was approved for the upcoming year.  EPS will strive to improve the practice information posted on the EPS website and forwarded to the students and faculty.  The Certification Officer will encourage the SHSU Testing Center to strive to improve its communication, processes, and procedures to continue the trend of improvement.  The Certification Officer will strive to improve the communication, processes, and procedures related to informing teacher candidates about representative administration details and the results.  The Certification Officer has suggested training in BTLPT and LOTE – Spanish administration.

Provide supplementary academic advisement as students prepare to enter the educator preparation program.

ADVISING
EPS noted the decrease in the ratings of this area of service, and that it is below the goal of 4.2.  As all but one service area had an unanticipated decrease in ratings, EPS considered the possibility that the new Unit Operations Survey instrument implemented in 2010-2011 contributed to the decrease.  The related pages on the EPS website will be improved. The new advisor/recruiter (began May 2011) will strive to improve the communication, processes, and procedures related to advising teacher candidates about teacher preparation programs.  The new Recruiter/Advisor will travel more to better inform and advise future SHSU education students.  The advisor/recruiter will seek out and complete professional development that will assist her in addressing her responsibilities. The advisor has suggested training in advising (particularly secondary education minors), communication, and recruitment.

FIELD EXPERIENCE
EPS noted the decrease in the ratings of this area of service, and that it is below the goal of 4.2.  As all but one service area had an unanticipated decrease in ratings, EPS considered the possibility that the new Unit Operations Survey instrument implemented in 2010-2011 contributed to the decrease.  The related pages on the EPS website will be improved. The EPS secretary and director will strive to improve the communication, processes, and procedures related to informing students and assisting them with application and admission to educator preparation programs.  Transition to eCollege system wil be implemented.  The Mentor Orientation Workshop  program will be expanded, and other related Texas Education Agency compliance issues will be addressed.  Professional development and support will be provided for all University Supervisors to assist them in providing excellent support and supervision to student teachers. In 2011-2012, the graduate assistant in her second year will delegate more, take on more responsibilities, and revise the manual in anticipation of a new graduate assistant replacing her in 2012.  In addition to concentrating on field experience, the EPS secretary will increase global awareness and oversight of the office, particularly the student assistants.  The EPS secretary will strive to improve office environment, technology skills, and delegation, and will better anticipate recurring events.  The EPS secretary and Director will seek out and complete professional development that will assist in addressing responsibilities.  The secretary suggested training in professional writing and spreadsheet management, and the Director has suggested training in leadership and management.

Support teacher candidates and other school professional candidates by providing effective communication of information (including testing pre-requisites, examination schedule, and applicable review software and practice examinations) and approval for required state educator certification examinations.
