Counseling MED (School Counselor)

Goal
Student Diversity
Understand human diversity and apply this knowledge to ensure that the developmental guidance and counseling program is responsive to all students.

Objective
Graduates Will Demonstrate An Understanding Of Ways To Create A Positive School Environment In Which Diversity Is Respected.
Graduates of the MEd in School Counseling will demonstrate an understanding of ways to evaluate, create, and maintain a positive school environment in which diversity is acknowledged and respected.

Indicator
School-wide Cultural Competency Observation Checklist (SCCOC)
MEd school counseling students enrolled in CNE 635 will have developed skills and knowledge required to evaluate the school environment concerning diversity utilizing the SCCOC.

Criterion
Successfully Complete The SCCOC
Competence as a school counselor includes the ability to successfully complete the SCCOC and do the following:
1. respond to all items on the SCCOC
2. understand the results of the SCCOC
3. report the results of the SCCOC to the school administrators and staff
4. make recommendations to improve the school environment in which diversity is acknowledged and respected.

Finding
Results Of SCCOC And Action Plan
1. All 45 students enrolled in CNE 635 successfully completed the 33-item SCCOC to evaluate their school campus with respect to creating and maintaining a positive school environment in which diversity is acknowledged and respected.
2. Based on the results of the SCCOC, each student prepared and presented a report including an Action Plan to the campus administrators and staff.
3. The Action Plan included three strengths, three challenges and recommendations to address the three challenges to improve the school environment in which diversity is respected and celebrated.

Action
Follow-up To Action Plan
The SCCOC is completed and the report and Action Plan are submitted to school administrators and staff at the end of the semester. This does not give students the opportunity to evaluate improvements to the three challenges based on implementation of the Action Plan. For 2011-2012 school year, CNE 635 students will complete the SCCOC and develop an Action Plan at mid-term rather than at the end of the course. School administrators and staff will be encouraged to implement Action Plan immediately. At the end of CNE 635, students will re-evaluate the school environment looking for improvements to the three challenges based on the results of the SCCOC.

Goal
Planning And Implementing The Developmental Guidance And Counseling Program
Students in the MEd school counseling program understand how to plan, implement, and evaluate a developmental guidance program, including counseling services, that promotes all students' success.

Objective
Closing The Gap Plan
Students in the school counseling program will develop a needs assessment and use to assess the needs of students in a school and based on the results of the needs assessment will develop a Closing the Gap Plan that is proactive and preventative in design.

Indicator
Implement Counseling And Guidance Activities To Close The Gap
MEd school counseling students enrolled in CNE 635 will develop and carry out a school-wide needs assessment to determine activities and learning experiences needed as part of a proactive counseling and guidance program designed to support closing the gap for students in areas of learning, social and emotional needs.

Criterion
Needs Assessment Completed By 100%
School Counseling students in CNE 635 will obtain a 100% response rate of teachers in the school completing the needs assessment designed to develop guidance and counseling activities/experiences designed to close the gap.

Finding
Closing The Gap Action Plan
Students in CNE 635 did not have a 100% return rate of the student needs assessment from teachers on their campuses. Competed surveys by teachers ranged from 65% to 85% for the 45 students enrolled in the course. Based on the results of the needs assessment survey, students in CNE 635 developed a Closing the Gap Plan to address the unique needs of students identified by teachers on their campus. Teachers offered the following as needs of students that prevented them from being successful in school: (1) poor attendance, (2) poor time management skills, (3) too many discipline referrals resulting in "In School Suspension" which took students out of classroom instructional time.

Action
Increase Rate Of Student Needs Assessment
Students in CNE 635 will be required to schedule an appointment with campus administrators prior to requesting teachers complete the student needs assessments and seek permission to administer the needs assessment at a faculty meeting for the purpose of increasing the return response rate.

Goal
Research Competence
To develop graduate research compentencies that result in action research projects designed to address a current need in a school.

Objective
Graduate Students Will Demonstrate Competency In Research
School Counseling  MEd students will demonstrate competency in research; including design, methods, procedures, and evaluation of research in course CNE 579, Research Methods.

Indicator
Research Project Grading Rubric
MEd school counseling students enrolled in CNE 579, Research Methods will present a scholarly prepared and conducted action research project demonstrating graduate level research skills.

Criterion
At Least 75 Points
Students must score 75 out of 100 points on the Research Project Grading Rubric

Finding
Research Improvements
Counseling MEd students scored 80% or better on the research project grading rubric.

Action
Continued Improvement In Research Competence
Counseling MEd students will be encouraged to take the results of their research projects one step further and use the results to identify a weakness or strength of the population surveyed.

Update to previous cycle's plan for continuous improvement

Plan for continuous improvement The major issue to address in the School Counseling MEd program is to plan and develop curricula action plans based on the results of needs assessments completed by 100% of the teachers in their school campus. Based on the results of the need assessment and the SCCOC the action plan needs to align with ASCA National Model, and Texas Counseling and Guidance Curriculum Model. Graduate students in the school counseling program need to advocate for the role of the counselor and clearly articulate to school administrators and teachers the benefits for students as a result of participation in the school counseling program.  In addition, graduates of the MEd school counseling program will demonstrate an understanding of the role of the school counselor in promoting career preparation and continued education for successful transitions from public school to work with an emphasis on closing the achievement gap for the students they serve in public schools. Finally, faculty teaching CNE 579 (COUN 5379) will assess MEd students' research skills improvement to maintain a score of 75 or better out of 100 points on the Research Project Grading Rubric.
