Objective
PHD Candidates Will Demonstrate Knowledge Of The Literature
Candidates of the Counselor Education PHD program will demonstrate knowledge of current literature in the field of counseling to conduct their own independent research.

Indicator
Quality Dissertation Checklist
The Quality Dissertation Checklist will be used to score the introduction, literature review, and methodology of the dissertation proposal.

Criterion
Committee Approval And 85% Rating On Checklist
All committee members must approve the proposal before the candidate can begin data collection. Students will score 85% on the Quality Dissertation Checklist

Finding
Knowledge Of Literature Findings
Although students eventually met the criterion, they continue to struggle with APA format in the literature review.  They also struggle with determining the significance of the study and detailing methodology.

Knowledge Of Literature
Doctoral faculty will address the delineated weaknesses to knowledge of counseling education literature in the following ways:

  1. Faculty teaching doctoral research courses, COUN 7110 (APA Publication style), COUN 7372, COUN 7339, COUN 7362, COUN 7373, COUN 7374, and COUN 7363 will place stronger emphasis on student’s ability to format and write according to proper APA Publication Style parameters.
  2. Faculty teaching doctoral research courses, COUN 7110 (APA Publication style), COUN 7372, COUN 7339, COUN 7362, COUN 7373, COUN 7374, and COUN 7363 will place greater emphasis on development of more thoroughly researched literature reviews, more clearly stated significance of the study, and more detailed methodology for each student enrolled in these research courses.

Candidates of the Counseling Education PHD program will demonstrate competency in research by planning, implementing, analyzing, and writing a scholarly dissertation based on original research.

Degree candidates will score at least 95% with the understanding that 100% must be achieved before final dissertation approval and graduation.

Research Competency
  1. Students frequently require several revisions before they are ready to defend. We want to develop a class on APA Publication style (COUN 7110). Students will be expected to accurately use APA writing and formatting guidelines in all doctoral courses. In order to pass their final defense, doctoral students must present a dissertation document accurately formatted in APA style including writing mechanics as well as creation of tables and figures. The exception to APA style only occurs in areas delineated by SHSU’s Dissertation Style Manual.  
  2. Students in many of the doctoral courses are expected to prepare and submit manuscripts for publication in accurate APA Publication style.

Update to previous cycle's plan for continuous improvement

Plan for continuous improvement Doctoral program faculty will place emphasis on doctoral students' development of competent facility with APA Publication style in all classes, with emphasis in the dissertation process, particularly the review of literature.  Student productivity of scholarly writing and publication to prepare them for the professorate will be encouraged.
