Goal
Quality, Mission Driven Faculty
The primary resource for an academic unit is the strength of its faculty. The Department of General Business and Finance embraces the traditional tripod of expections: Teaching, Research, and Service. The department is committed to recruit and retaining a faculty capable of leading the department's efforts to meet its mission.

Faculty will meet or exceed Departmental expectations related to teaching, research, and service.

Indicator
Effective Researchers
The department's faculty will continue to publish articles in peer-reviewed journals and strive to increase the number of publications each year. For the 2010 - 2011 academic year, the department will have 25 referred journal articles, which represents an average of slightly more than one publication per tenure/tenure-track faculty member.

Each faculty member will publish at least once per year in a refereed journal or a conference proceeding.

Finding
Effective Researchers
 The Department of General Business and Finance has 27 faculty members (including tenure, tenure track and adjunct).  The Department established a goal of publishing an average of at least one journal article per faculty member.  For the 2010 - 2011 academic year, the Department far exceeded its expectation and published 76 journal publications.  It is through the Department's dedication and commitment to supporting its faculty members that this goal was exceeded.  The department also believes that the implementation of a formal mentoring program was instrumental in enabling newer faculty to meet publication goals.

Percentage Of Faculty That Serve On Editorial Review Boards
In an effort to support the department's research goals, it is important that faculty members be actively networking in publication outlets.  The department will have at least five (5%) percent of its faculty serving on the editorial boards of peer reviewed journals.

Finding
Editorial/Review Board Members
 In an effort to constantly increase the Department's performance standards, the Department created a new goal of maintaining a faculty presence on editorial review boards.  The standard was set at a minimal level of 5%, which equates to 1.3 faculty members.

The Department far exceeded the minimal standard set and had seven faculty members serve as either an editor or on the editorial/review board for a journal.  The standard will be increased for next year to allow the department's standards to be advanced.

Effective Teachers
The department, college, and university utilize the IDEA System as part of its evaluation of classroom performance. The IDEA System, developed by the IDEA Center at Kansas State University, is a nationally normed, validated and reliable measure of classroom performance based on the top 12 learning objectives. The IDEA scores are a major portion of the department's Faculty Evaluation System (FES) as it relates to classroom performance.

Eighty percent (80%) of all faculty in the department will meet or surpass the departmentally set minimum IDEA score of 50 on the Discipline Weighted Average in at least half of their courses taught.

General Business And Finance Faculty Teaching Effectiveness
 At least eighty (80) percent of the department's faculty achieved a fifty (50) percent on their IDEA form evaluations in at least half the courses they taught.

Effective Service Provider
The Department of General Business and Finance uses the Faculty Evaluation System (FES) Form 4 to document service activities of the faculty. The percentage of effective service providers defined and measured using FES 4 will provide data concerning the service activities of the faculty.

Percentage Of Faculty Holding Officer Positions Within Professional Organizations
The department is committed to achieving its service related goals.  To this end the department believes that faculty must be involved in professional organizations in their respective fields of study.  The department will have at least ten (10%) of its faculty holding officer positions within the professional organizations in which they hold memberships.

Faculty Holding Officer Positions
In an effort to promote Sam Houston State University and the Department, encourages faculty members to seek leadership in outside organizations.  The goal of having 10% or 2.6 faculty members hold officer positions in professional organizations was far exceeded.  For the 2010-2011 academic year the Department had seven (7) faculty members had an officer position in a regional or national/international organization.

Technology Utilization And Modern Teaching
The Department of General Business and Finance believes that it is critical that students needs be met.  In today's world of technology, students rely on the ability to access grades and communicate with faculty electronically.  The department is on the cutting edge of technology and is constantly improving the use of technology in the classroom and in communicating with students.

Ninety (90%) percent of the department's faculty will utilize technology in communicating with students and/or providing academic support material electronically.


Finding
Faculty Technology Utilization And Modern Teaching
The Department has been a leader this year in technology utilization and modern teaching.  The Department has developed nine on-line courses.  These courses provide on-line instruction at the undergraduate and graduate level.  More than half the Department's faculty members are currently developing on-line course(s).  This illustrates the Department's commitment to being a leader within the College and University. 

In addition, the Department's faculty met its goal related to technology utilization.  One hundred percent of the Department's faculty utilizes technology as it relates to their courses.  Today's students are technology savvy.  They expect to be able to find information about their courses on the web.  In addition, they expect that they will be able to communicate with their faculty members remotely; especially since such a high percentage of the student body works.  The Department's achievements in this area simply illustrate a commitment to met students' needs as related to instructor accessibility and information availability.

The Department of General Business and Finance has been a leader in technology and on-line course development.  In order to maintain its leadership role within the college, the faculty will continue to develop on-line courses to offer students at the university.  This enables the department, the college and the university to broaden its exposure and is in support of the college and university's goals.

The Department of General Business and Finance in an effort to support the goals of the College of Business Administration, to remain competitive with other schools in the State, and to meet our mission must constantly evaluate existing programs and courses, and design new programs and courses to meet the needs of the region, state and country.

In an effort to support the goals of the college and the University, the department is committed to hiring at least 75% of its faculty from Carnegie Doctoral Universities.

Finding
Recruit And Retain Quality Faculty
The Department of General Business and Finance is dedicated to maintaining the highest level of education for our students.  This requires that we hire and retain the best faculty.  During the 2010 - 2011 academic year the Department had one business communication position.  This position was filled by a candidate from a Carnegie Doctorial Granting University.  Therefore, the Department exceeded the goal by having one hundred percent (100%) of new faculty hired from Carnegie Doctorial Granting Universities.

To ensure that programs are current and high quality, the department supports the college goal of maintaining accreditation.  The College of Business has earned accreditation from the most prestigious accrediting agency for schools of business (AACSB, International).

Percentage Of Academically Qualified And Professionally Qualified Faculty
The College of Business is accredited by the most prestigious accrediting agency for schools of business, AACSB, International.  AACSB, International standards require that 90% of the department's faculty be academically qualified or professionally qualified.  Academically qualified is defined as having a terminal degree in the area that the faculty member instructs.  Professionally Qualified is defined in two ways, first, if the instructor is less than five years out of the workforce in the area in which they instruct then they are professionally qualified.  The second way in which an instructor can be Professionally Qualified, involves the instructor publishing academic articles; after the instructor has been away from professional practice for more than five years they must have a publication record.

The College is accredited by the most prestigious accrediting agency for business schools, AACSB, International.  AACSB requires that faculty members either be Academically Qualified ("AQ") or Professionally Qualified ("PQ").  The Department has twenty-two faculty members who are academically qualified by having a terminal degree in their respective field of study and an active publication history.  The department has one faculty member who is not academically qualified.  The Department has four members who are are not professionally qualified, by having an established publication record and having current professional experience in their respective area of study.

Thus, the Department is below its goal of its faculty members meeting AACSB's AQ or PQ status requirement.

Action
Promote Quality Academic Programs
To support the college’s goal of program recognition, the department is currently evaluating the AQ/PQ status of each faculty member.  The department will ensure that it meets or exceeds the AACSB requirement of having 90% of the sections the department offers taught by an Academically Qualified (AQ) or Professionally Qualified (PQ) instructor.   



Update to previous cycle's plan for continuous improvement

Plan for continuous improvement The recently completed assessment cycle for the Department of General Business and Finance revealed that while publication and teaching goals were met there is still improvement that can occur.  The Department implemented a mentoring program that will pair a tenure-track faculty member with a tenured faculty to assist the junior faculty member with publication goals. This was a enormous success, our newest faculty members continue to be extremely productive researchers.  The Department will continue this program with its newest member in the Fall 2011 when our newest member joins the Business Communication faculty.

The department, college, and university utilize the IDEA System as part of its evaluation of classroom performance. The IDEA System, developed by the IDEA Center at Kansas State University, is a nationally normed, validated and reliable measure of classroom performance based on the top 12 learning objectives. The IDEA scores are a major portion of the department's Faculty Evaluation System (FES) as it relates to classroom performance.  This year the department increased the expectations of this measure to meeting or exceeding the national norm in at least 50% of classes taught. The higher standard was met by the Department’s faculty.  To help the faculty achieve this higher standard, the Department of General Business and Finance will have at least two faculty training sessions per year that address instructor effectiveness and classroom management. Furthermore, faculty will be encouraged to participate in teaching effectiveness programs offered by the university's newly created Professional and Academic Center for Excellence (PACE).

The assessment cycle also revealed that the department did not meet the percentage of faculty deemed qualified under standards set by the AACSB.  The AACSB is the accrediting agency for the College of Business.  The department is currently evaluating each faculty member to determine whether they meet AACSB's standard.  The AACSB requires that instructors be either Academically Qualified (AQ) or Professionally Qualified (PQ).  The department's main issue is with the PQ standard and how it now applies to adjuncts based on the latest interpretation of the AACSB standards.
