Counseling MED (School Counselor)

Goal
Professional Practice And Training
MED candidates engage in an internship providing professional practice and training experiences.

Objective
Graduates Will Successfully Complete An Appropriate Professional Practice And Training Experience.
Graduates of the MED in School Counseling will successfully complete an appropriate professional practice and training experience by demonstrating a thorough understanding of the role of the school counselor.

Indicator
Texas Examinations Of Educator Standards (TExES) And National Board Of Counselor Certification (NBCC) Exam
MED Students enrolled in field practicum will have developed skills and knowledge required for counselor certification and licensure in Texas.

Criterion
Competence In All Domains Identified By The TExES And NBCC Exam
1. Competence as a school counselor includes the ability to perform the following roles and responsibilities as outlined on the TExES Examination while completing field practicum in a school setting: 1. Program Management 2. Guidance 3. Counseling 4. Consultation 5. Coordination 6. Student Assessment 7. Professional Behavior 8. Professional Standards.
2. Competence as a counselor includes he ability to perform roles and responsibilities outlined by NBCC. (MED students are represented on the first page of the attachment.)

Finding
Weak Domains
1. Two out of 11 candidates did not pass the TExES exam, which gives us a 82% pass rate. The weak area for these two students is Domain II - Planning and Implementing the Development Guidance and Counseling Program.
2. Pass rate for MEd. students on the NBCC exam is 10 of the 13 testing with a 77% pass rate. The common weak area is Career and Lifestyle Development. 

 




Action
Curriculum Realignment
Program faculty will study the curriculum to determine where each domain is addressed and where the weaker areas can gain more focus.  The career counseling course and school counseling courses will be particularly examined.

Knowledge through literature reviews.


Objective
Graduate Students Will Demonstrate Knowledge Of Counseling Literature
Graduate students in the counseling program will demonstrate knowledge of current literature in counseling by preparing literature reviews of selected topics.

Literature Review Rubric And Comprehensive Exams

Criterion
Scoring
1.  85 points out of 100 points on the rubric.
2.  Comprehensive exams are scored by faculty resulting in fail, pass, or high pass.  Students must score pass or high pass.  If the score is failing, students must retake the comprehensive exam.

Finding
Results
The rubric indicated weaknesses in APA format.  The comprehensive exams displayed weaknesses in the areas of CNE 570 Career Counseling and CNE 564 Theories of Counseling.

Action
Remedial Measures
APA format will needs to be required in all writing required in CNE courses so that students use it naturally.  Career counseling and theories of counseling courses need to be examined to address the weaknesses that emerged on the comprehensive exams.

Counseling MA students will demonstrate competency in research; including design, methods, procedures, and evaluation of research in course CNE 579, Research Methods.

Counseling MA students will demonstrate competency in research; including design, methods, procedures, and evaluation of research in course CNE 579, Research Methods.

Indicator
Research Project Grading Rubric
Students enrolled in CNE 579, Research Methods will present a scholarly prepared and conducted research project demonstrating graduate level research skills.

Criterion
At Least 75 Points
Students must score 75 out of 100 points on the Research Project Grading Rubric

Finding
Research Weaknesses
The major weaknesses associated with the research project are methodology, integration of results, discussion and current literature.

Action
Research Competence
More practice and experience with methodology and integration will be provided in CNE 579.


Update to previous cycle's plan for continuous improvement

Plan for continuous improvement The major issues to address for the Counseling MED are APA format and research competency.  Program faculty will require all written papers to be in APA format.  CNE 579, Research Methods, will increase focus on methodology in research and integration of results with previous literature.  The career counseling and theories of counseling courses will be examined and realigned with State Board of Education Certification (SBEC) standards which are tested on the TExES exam and NBCC exam as well as the comprehensive examinations.
