Kinesiology MED

Goal
Research Skills
The Kinesiology MED Program will emphasize research competencies and writing skills for students.

Objective
Research Knowledge
MED Kinesiology students will be able to critically evaluate research articles and make formal presentations.

Indicator
Student Research Article Evaluation
A rubric developed by the faculty will be used to determine if students have met this objective. This indicator assesses students' ability to critically evaluate a research article and present the information in a professional presentation. Students will be required to perform the following tasks to demonstrate that they have met this objective.

Students are to select one research in their chosen discipline. The article must be from a peer-reviewed, academic journal. Students will summarize the article in a short paper that addresses each of the key sections of the article (typically: review of relevant literature, method, results, and discussion). Students will then present the article to the class via a formalized research presentation. The presentation will be 12 minutes in length with 3 minutes for questions from the audience. Student presentations will be structured in a PowerPoint setting. Evaluation consists of professor's common rubric assessment of student performance on the research presentation key sections as stated above.

Criterion
Success Rate
Students must correctly address 3/4 key sections of a research article (review of literature, method, results, and discussion) on the common embedded assignment.

Finding
Research
90% of the students met the target on the common embedded research assignment and 10% of the students exceeded the target.

Action
Research
After a review of students performance on the common embedded research activities, students met or exceeded the target. Therefore, the program faculty will identify and set a new goal for the 2010-2011 academic year.  A literature review will be assigned that leads to a research question.

Goal
Critical Thinking Skills
Produce Kinesiology Graduates with critical thinking skills

Objective
Applying Critical Thinking
Kinesiology, MED students will be able to apply content competencies and skills relevant to Kinesiology using critical thinking.

Indicator
Critical Thinking Exams/Projects
Common critical thinking assignments and projects developed by faculty in the following courses will be used to determine if students have mastered or met this objective.

-Research Seminar (KIN 574)
-Program Development (KIN 592)
-Current Issues in Kinesiology (KIN 597)

Criterion
Critical Thinking Assessment
Students must score at least 80% correct on the common embedded critical thinking assignments and projects required in KIN 574, KIN 592, and KIN 597.

Finding
Critical Thinking
90% of the students met the target of 80% correct on the embedded critical thinking assessments and 10% of the students exceeded the target.

Action
Critical Thinking
After a review of student performance on the common embedded critical thinking skills assessments, students met or exceeded the target. The use of logic and deductive reasoning were the primary weaknesses.  Future critical thinking assignments will address these skills.

Update to previous cycle's plan for continuous improvement

Plan for continuous improvement After reviewing the findings, it was noted that the students met or exceeded the goals for research and critical thinking skills. Therefore, the program faculty will identify and set new goals for the MED Kinesiology program, 2010-2011 academic year.  Specifically, a literature review that leads to a research question will be required, and critical thinking exercises will concentrate on logical and deductive reasoning.
