This objective was not assessed in 2009-2010 but is scheduled for assessment in fall of 2010.
Action
Programming Actions
This objective is scheduled to be assessed during the semester of fall 2010. All faculty scheduled to conduct assessments must meet with the assessment coordinator and department chair prior to the beginning of the semester to review objectives, criterion, and indicators.
Objective
Systems Analysis And Design
Students who complete the BBA in Management Information Systems will demonstrate an understanding of the design and application of information systems in business and a knowledge of the tools and processes used in systems analysis and design. 379
Indicator
Systems Analysis And Design Pre-Test, Post-Test, And Rubric
Assessment will be made using pre-test and post-test performance on the design and application of information systems and the tools and processes used to achieve such designs. A rubric will be used to assess skills in systems analysis and design.379
Criterion
Systems Analysis And Design: Improvement On Post-Test And Rubric Scores
Students will average at least a 50% improvement over the pre-test. The class average on individual post-test questions will be 75% correct. Post-test questions will be included on each unit examination. Seventy five percent of Management Information Systems majors will receive a score of at least acceptable on the Management Information Systems rubric. 379
Finding
Systems Analysis And Design Findings
The assessment included a pretest/posttest design based on course objectives, with student improvement ranging from 178% to 250% for five categories of topics: 1)Foundations for Systems Development (development environment and project management); 2) Systems Planning and Selection (project selection, project plan/workbook); 3)System Analysis (e.g. data flow diagramming, entity relationship diagramming); 4) System Design (human interface, databases); 5) and System Implementation and Operation. The overall improvement average was 205%. The post-test average was 75.8.
Action
Systems A&D
Based on the assessment results, it was determined instruction on the topic of System Planning and Selection will receive more focus in the future. This topic had a post-test average of 65.5. To enhance learning in this area, more role playing for project selection and practice exercises for project management planning are planned. In addition, it was noted that the next evaluation cycle should include an evaluation of the project workbook material which contains the documentation for a real world client project. This project is an applied exercise of the concepts learned in class which provides practice for problem solving, critical thinking development, and decision making.
Objective
Database
Students who complete the BBA in Management Information Systems will demonstrate an understanding of the design and implementation of database applications and how database software works and its inclusion in design solutions. 390
Indicator
Database Pre-Test, Post-Test, And Rubric
Assessment will be made using pre-test and post-test performance on design and implementation of database applications and how database software works.390
Criterion
Database: Improvement On Post-Test And Rubric Scores
Students will average at least a 50% improvement over the pre-test. The class average on individual post-test questions will be 75% correct. Post-test questions will be included on each unit examination. 390
Finding
Database Findings
The average for the pretest was 35.3% and the average for the posttest was 77.3%, meeting the target of 75%.
Action
Database MGT
The learning objectives for database management will be reviewed for relevancy and assessed on a scheduled regular basis. The next evaluation cycles will also include evaluating skills for building databases.
Objective
Electronic Commerce
Students who complete the BBA in Management Information Systems will demonstrate the ability to implement business oriented systems for electronic commerce and skills in using Internet technologies. 431
Indicator
Electronic Commerce Pre-Test And Post-Test
Assessment will be made using pre-test and post-test performance on business oriented systems.431
Criterion
Electronic Commerce: Improvement On Post-Test Scores
Students will average at least a 50% improvement over the pre-test. The class average on individual post-test questions will be 75% correct. Post-test questions will be included on each unit examination. 431
Finding
Electronic Commerce
A skills based exam was administered to evaluate the following topics: XHTML, CSS, Photoshop, and JavaScript. This pre-test indicated that 28 out of 30 students had essentially no understanding of any of the topics and that 2 out of the 30 had some knowledge of a few of the topics. As expected, considerable improvement was noted in the post-test with an average of 80%.
Action
E-Commerce
The previous assessment for this course was completed in spring 2008. That assessment identified one area that could be improved; students’ programming skills using JavaScript. This evaluation cycle indicates that significant improvements were made in terms of learning the material, as was evidenced by the students’ performance on the exams and graded exercises. For spring 2010, more class time was spent on this topic and more examples were presented. This did improve their understanding of the topic, but this particular area is still the weakest of the topics. To further enhance student learning, other instructional techniques will be investigated for future courses, to include more assignments and more individual instruction. Future course assessments may presume that students have no understanding of the material and will not administer a pre-test.
Goal
Management Information Systems Student Satisfaction
Management Information Systems students will be satisfied with instruction they receive.
Objective
MIS-Comparison With Aspirant Schools
Management Information Systems students will be as satisfied with the level of instructions they receive as those students who attend six aspirant schools, schools in the same Carnegie Class, and all schools who participate in the Educational Benchmarking Inc. - Undergraduate Business Exit Assessment.
Indicator
MIS-Educational Benchmarking Inc- Undergraduate Business Exit Assessment
For over a decade, Educational Benchmarking Inc. has been the premier provider of benchmarking assessments for management education. This organization measures the effectiveness of a program from the student's perspective. Therefore, the opinions of Management students as measured by the Educational Benchmarking Inc. Undergraduate Business Exit Assessment will be used to measure student satisfaction.
Criterion
Management Information Systems Comparison
The mean satisfaction level of Sam Houston State University's management majors will be in the top 50% when compared to six aspirant schools, schools in the same Carnegie Class, and all participating schools.
Finding
Findings
The mean perception of satisfaction with the quality of the faculty and instruction was indeed in the top 50% when compared to six aspirant schools, schools in the same Carnegie Class, and all participating schools. In fact, Sam Houston State University ranked at least in the top 45% of all three comparison groups.
