Mathematics MA

Goal
Deliver A Curriculum With Appropriate Discipline Specific Knowledge
The curriculum will address the discipline specific knowledge dictated by professional societies and/or professionals in the workforce.

Objective
Understanding Mathematical Structures
Students will prove theorems or solve problems or explain concepts in the following core areas
  • abstract algebra structures such as groups, rings, fields, functions, homomorphisms, and isomorphisms.
  • differential and integral calculus
  • probability and statistics, particularly inferential statistics, and
  • tranformational geometry to include isometries and non-isometric transformations such as circles of inversion.

Indicator
MA Comprehensive Oral Examination
Students in the MA program will take an oral examination over the four areas covered in the objective. The oral examination will be graded by a committee of faculty using a rubric developed and approved by department faculty.

Criterion
Successful Completion Of Comperhensive Exam.
100% of the MA students will receive a grade of  "Pass" or "High Pass" on each of the four areas according to the attached rubric.

Finding
MA Students Completing Comprehensive Examination
One student completed her oral comprehensive exam in July.  She received a grade of "pass" on abstract algebra, calculus, and geometry.  She failed the probability/statistics portion of the exam.  She will retest on this portion in the fall.

Action
Action Pending Findings
The department did not meet its goal of having 100% of its MA students pass their MA oral comprehensive examination.  While the student will retake the failed portion (probabilty and statistics) in the fall, faculty teaching the MA core courses will discuss the results of this exam in the fall and determine if modifications in format or questions need to be made or changes made to the curriculum or pedagogical approaches.

Update to previous cycle's plan for continuous improvement

Plan for continuous improvement One MA student took her oral comprehensive examination this July, but was not successful in passing all portions of the test.  As noted in the "Action" for the objective, MA faculty will discuss these results and determine if modifications are needed.   Any changes that may need to be made to improve the oral comprehensive exam process will be made prior to the next round of oral exams.
