The review will consist of student work from these classes presented to a faculty committee. Students will pass the review before admission to BFA programs in Studio Art, Graphic Design, Computer Animation or Photography. The review will offer faculty the opportunity to asses the student's individual progress. The process of reviewing a body of student work will also provide the opportunity to assess the following courses required before the review:
Art 130 and 131 (WASH)
Art 163 (Drawing)
Art 164 (Life Drawing 1)
Art 262 (Foundations in Digital Art)

Indicator
BFA Review Will Be A Gate

Finding
Increasing Participation
In the Fall 2009, 33 students participated in the BFA portfolio review and 60 students participated in the Spring 2010. There are still some students who are taking the BFA review in their senior year but there are fewer students in upper level classes who have not taken the review.

Action
Increase Student Awareness And Compliance
The BFA review committee will continue to refine the process of the BFA portfolio review. To increase student compliance the BFA review requirement will continue to be announced in classes, included in syllabi, and it will be added to the department website. The committee will consider making the BFA review required the semester a student is in a specific class that is part of the required Art Core in order to achieve full compliance.

Objective

The indicator will be that students have guidelines and understand the requirement and faculty have criteria by which to asses the work.

Criterion
Under Development
Faculty will develop criteria to assess the work in the Graduating Senior Exhibition.

Finding
Senior Exhibition Is An Ineffective Assessment Tool
The Graduating Senior Exhibition is considered a requirement for all students graduating with a BFA. While this is common knowledge among faculty, it is not listed as a requirement in the art catalog or in any course description and students are given few if any guidelines beyond being told that they must include work in the exhibit. They are informed the semester of graduating.
BFA Graphic Design Students enrolled in the Art 434 Senior Studio in Graphic Design held an exhibition of work at the Lowman Student Center. This will be an annual exhibit and part of the course requirement.
Because of the large number of graduating seniors, it is difficult if not impossible for BFA students to exhibit an amount of work that demonstrates a cohesive body in one exhibit that includes all seniors.

Action
Develop Guidelines For Exhibition Requirement
The art Department will develop guidelines for requiring senior BFA studio majors to exhibit a body of work. This exhibition will be associated with a senior thesis course.

The Department will develop strategies making exhibition venues available to graduating seniors.

The graduating senior exhibition will continue to be held as a large group exhibition that promotes the work of each graduating class.

Update to previous cycle's plan for continuous improvement

Plan for continuous improvement The Art Department promotes and teaches critical thinking, creative research, and aesthetic understanding through Bachelor of Fine Art Degrees in Studio Art, Photography, Graphic Design, and Computer Animation and Bachelor of Art degrees in Art and Photography. The Department serves the university and the community through the exhibition of contemporary art from throughout the United States in the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery.
In 2009-2010 the department moved a digital photography lab from the Dan Rather Communications building into a newly renovated building that became part of the art complex, and completed construction of a 6,000 sq. ft. building for W.A.S.H, the department's new foundation program.
Four new tenure track faculty began teaching in Graphic Design, Computer Animation, Ceramics, and Art History in Fall 2009 and 2 new faculty received one year, full time appointments to teach the W.A.S.H. program in 2010-2011.
The BFA portfolio review has become an effective tool for the department to assess the work of the students completing foundation courses and to evaluate the content of these courses. The W.A.S.H. program has raised the need for a re-evaluation of the drawing classes that immediately follow it. The Department continues to assess and refine the curriculum of the four program areas and is in the process of making the curriculum of the 2 BA degrees more uniform and the curriculum of the BFA in Studio Art more specific.
