The Health and Kinesiology Faculty will demonstrate effective teaching practices.
Objective
Teaching Effectiveness
The Health and Kinesiology Faculty will score above the national average on the IDEA System assessment of teaching effectiveness.
Indicator
IDEA Student Ratings
The IDEA System is a quantitative instrument used to assess student perception of teaching performance of the Health and Kinesiology faculty during the fall and spring semesters annually. Using the IDEA System, students rate the professors' instructional strategies, teaching methods, and their overall in-class goals.
Criterion
Teaching Effectiveness
Faculty in the Department of Health and Kinesiology will have an average score of at least 4.5 on a 5-point scale of the IDEA System quantitative assessment of teaching effectiveness (see example of quality teaching).
Finding
Teaching Effectiveness
20% (2/9) of the faculty met the target of having an average score of 4.5 or better on the IDEA System students' rating of teaching effectiveness. 80% of the faculty average scores ranged from 4.3-4.4, therefore did not achieve the target.
Action
Teaching Effectiveness
The department will continue to promote teacher effectiveness by providing appropriate resources and professional development.
Goal
Promote And Provide Effective Communication
The Department of Health and Kinesiology will provide effective communication with internal and external constituencies through a department newsletter.
Objective
Department Newsletter
The Department of Health and Kinesiology will publish a newsletter to distribute to internal and external constituencies twice annually (fall and spring). The newsletter will feature the happenings and achievement of the department. In addition, the newsletter will spotlight outstanding student achievements, accomplishments, and scholarships awarded during the academic year.
Indicator
Newsletter Records
On the 1st and 15th of each month, the editor of the department newsletter will request from the faculty department “happening/news”. The editor, along with the publication committee will review and compile the submissions for the newsletter. The editor will retain a copy of all submissions and a record of each request that was sent to the Health and Kinesiology faculty seeking their contributions to the newsletter.
Criterion
Newsletter Assessment
A minimum of 2 news letters will be published during the 2009-2010 academic year. A copy of each published department newsletter (happenings) and a distribution list will be maintained in the Department of Health and kinesiology. See attached examples.
Finding
Communications
This objective as stated was not met. However a Happenings Report was submitted to the dean's office bi-weekly each month during the 2009-2010 academic year. These reports contained all of the professional happenings and contributions of the faculty and students rendered over the course of the academic year.
Action
Communications
After reviewing the findings, this goal will be continued for the 2010-2011 academic year. Greater efforts will be made to publish a minimum of two news letters during the academic year (fall and spring semesters).
Goal
Promotion Of Faculty Scholarship
The Health and Kinesiology Faculty will exhibit scholarly productivity on an annual basis.
Objective
Faculty Scholarship
The Health and Kinesiology tenured and tenure track faculty will demonstrate scholarly productivity through journal publications and presentations at professional conferences annually.
Indicator
Evidence Of Scholarship
The Health and Kinesiology faculty will publish, or present scholarly research in published books, professional journals; international, national, or state conferences annually documented by copies of published articles, book chapters, or conference programs.
Criterion
Assessing Scholarship
At least 80% of the Health and Kinesiology tenured and tenure track faculty will publish a journal article, or book chapter, or book: or present a major research paper at an international, national, or state conference (see attached example of published article by Dr. Emily Roper, Kinesiology faculty member).
Finding
Scholarship
100% of the faculty met target. All tenured/tenured track faculty had at least one publication during the 2009-2010 academic year.
Action
Scholarship
Since 100% of the faculty met the 2009-2010 scholarship target, a new goal for the faculty will be to have at least three articles published over the next two years which would average at least one and a half publications per year. The department will continue to support faculty with their research endeavors. Funds will continue to be allocated for faculty to attend professional conferences and to present their research. The department is committed to the success of their publication efforts.
Goal
Promotion Of Student Professional Leadership
The Department of Health and Kinesiology will promote and produce graduates with professional leadership skills.
Objective
Student Participation
Students in the Department of Health and Kinesiology will participate in a variety of leadership learning opportunities for personal and professional benefits.
Indicator
Practicing Leadership
Students in the department of Health and Kinesiology will be provided with numerous opportunities to practice and refine their professional leadership skills. The faculty will develop assignments and learning opportunities in the core classes that will require student participation. The assignments/learning activities will include the following: * formal class presentations * attending and presenting at professional conferences * serving as a mentor * serving as an instructional coach/tutor * conducting inquiry into professional practice * member of a professional/student organization * officer in a professional/student organization * develop a professional resume * perform at least 10 hours of community service
Criterion
Leadership Assessment
At least 80% of the students in the Department of Health and Kinesiology will participate in at least five of the nine leadership assignments/activities during the academic year and will demonstrate appropriate/acceptable leadership skills and practice as evaluated by the faculty using a common rubric (an example of an event and a student roster are attached).
Finding
Leadership
75% of the students in the department of Health and Kinesiology met the target of participating in at least five of the nine leadership assignments during the 2009-2010 academic year. 25% of the students did not meet this target.
Action
Leadership
After reviewing the findings, the department realized that 25% of the students did not engage in the recommended leadership activities during the 2009-2010 academic year. Many of the students reported schedule conflicts as a cause for non-participation. This objective will continue to be emphasized and the department will continue to schedule events during the fall and spring semesters in a variety of time slots and locations so that more students may have an opportunity to participate and gain leadership experience.
