The overarching goal for Recreational Sports is to encourage physicial fitness.
Objective
Benefits Reported
Students who participate in fitness programs as part of Recreational Sports will report they have gained benefits from the programs.
Indicator
StudentVoice Surveys
Surveys through StudentVoice will assess the various fitness programs.
Criterion
Over 70% Of Participants Will Report Benefits
Over 70% will be able to identify at least one benefit from participating in fitness programs provided by Recreational Sports
Finding
Participant Reports
Participants in the group fitness programs reported benefits from the program including over 92% responding to the group fitness survey: 23.64% reported healthy lifestyle as a benefit, and 14.55% each found physical well-being/appearance and self-confidence as benefits from group fitness.
Regarding weight training, over 74% reported benefits including 20.63% benefitting in physical well-being/appearance and 19.28% reporting healthy lifestyle as a benefit.
The two areas of which group fitness participants wanted more included yoga and hip-hop. Participants in weight training rated the staff highest on attitude and appearance and lowest on attentiveness.
Action
Recreational Sports Interventions
The group fitness class wanted most is hip-hop followed by yoga. Recreational Sports will consider adding more of these classes dependent on cost and availability of instructors. The weight-room staff must be attentive to maintain safety, so specific training in this area will be provided to all weight-room staff.
Goal
Outdoor Recreation
Outdoor Recreation is designed to encourage students to engage in outdoor activities and work as a team.
Objective
Spring Break Trip To Big Bend
Students who take advantage of the spring break to Big Bend will report participation: 1. increased self-esteem, 2. enhanced interpersonal relationships 3. involved learning at least one new skill.
Indicator
Survey With StudentVoice
The indicator will be a survey with a Likert scale 1-5 with a place for comments for two of the items.
Criterion
At Least 85% Reporting Positive Experience.
At least 85 % of participants to Big Bend will report on the survey positive experiences with the trip.
Finding
Student Report Of Trip
Survey results indicate 11 respondents with: 1. 63.64% strongly agreeing that the trip enhanced their self-esteem 2. 100% strongly agreeing that the trip fostered interpersonal relationships. 3. 100% responding positively to whether they learned at least one new skill.
Weaknesses that emerged included that: not everyone believed their self-esteem was enhanced and a small percentage reported that it was not easy to obtain information about the trip.
Action
Actions For Trips
Although 63.64% strongly agreed and 27.27% moderately agreed that their self-esteem was enhanced, one person (9.09%) neither agreed nor disagreed. What might increase self-esteem is to actually discuss with each person or in a group what they were not able to do before the trip that now they are able to do. Articulating specifically of what they are proud as a result of the trip would also build self-esteem. Regarding the difficulty of obtaining information for the trip, perhaps we can do a better job of advertising and directing people to our website.
Goal
Bearkat Camp
Freshmen students are encouraged to attend Bearkat Camp to learn of spirit and traditiions at SHSU.
Objective
Student Preparation For SHSU At Bearkat Camp
Students who attend Bearkat Camp will report being better prepared to be a student at SHSU.
Indicator
StudentVoice Survey
Participants will complete a survey regarding experiences at Bearkat Camp before their exit.
Criterion
At Least 85% Will Report A Positive Experience
At least 85% of attendees at Bearkat Camp will report a positive experience.
Finding
Prepared Students
Fifty-nine participants completed the survey (at time of recording; data still being collected). Over 96% of participants reported they are better prepared to be a student at SHSU. Some weaknesses that emerged included: 6.72% did not care for the accommodations; 15.25% reported neutrality or that the camp did not elevate their self-esteem; and 8/47% were neutral or did not think the camp fostered relationships.
Action
Bearkat Camp Improvements
We will probably have to do some interviews to determine what caused some participants to believe their self-esteem was not enhanced or problems with the accommodations. The comments written by participants did not include issues of accommodations or self-esteem. Many were excited to know some people before they started school and most reported having a great time. So, it will be necessary to gather more specific information before we will know how to intervene in these issues. To that end, we will tweak the survey to encourage specific comments from anyone who is neutral or disagrees with a statement.
