Goal
To Further Excellence In Teaching
The College of Arts and Sciences will provide the resources,support, and mechanisms to assist departments a nd faculty in their efforts to improve teaching throughout the college curriculum.

Objective
Recruit Highly Credentialed Faculty
The college will strive to hire faculty who posses the terminal degree from R1 universities.

Tenure-track Faculty Hires
There were 9 new faculty hired into tenure track positions during the academic year. Seven had terminal degrees from R1 institutions. Two music faculty members had the Master of Music degree, but must complete the doctorate within their first three years.

The Dean's Office will get yearly updates on the faculty that have not completed the terminal degree and the Dean will meet with any faculty member not making acceptable progress.

Provide State-of-the-art Classroom And Performance Facilities
The college will provide adequate funding for classroom facilities and leadership in the acquisition of appropriate teaching, laboratory, and performance space.

The college will collect capital equipment requests from faculty and departments in the college, prioritize requests and request an appropriate amount to facilitate growth and development in the teaching and research missions of the college.

The college will acquire 60% of request equipment funding and allocate such to the programs.

Capital Equipment Allocations
Departments in the college requested $2,541,878 in capital equipment. COAS Office reprioritized and modified the resut to approximately $857,000. The college received budgeted funds of $857,000. This represents 100% of the requested capital equipment funds.Upon formal receipt of the budget, allocations will be made based on the original prioritized requests from the departments.

The college will solicit travel requests from faculty members, then request, acquire and allocate appropriate funding for proposed travel.

The departments in COAS requested approximately $301,600 in faculty travel funds, a 4% increase requests. Total travel allocations were $225,463 for a 75% funding rate.

The College of Arts and Sciences will encourage the development of new programs that reflect discpline specific and societal changes. The College will adhere to a formal, rigorous curriculum review process.

The college will identify all programs that are eligible for accreditation through professional organizations and inititiate the accreditation or reaccreditation in each case.

Seven programs are eligible for accreditation from external agencies. Four programs have been accredited or partially accredited. These are:
Music - NASM
Computer Science - ABET
Chemistry - ACS
Math Education - NCTM via NCATE

The Art program and the Theatre and Dance programs are in the preliminary stages of preparing initial submissions for accreditation.

The college will established fixed deadlines for submission of materials to the college curriculum committee and review items thoroughly in a timely manner.

A calendar will be published. The calendar will be adhered to and all proposals will be submitted to the University committee in a timely manner.

College Curriculum Committee Calendar
The calendar was published by COAS and all departments were mandated to follow the calendar. Deadlines were modified to earlier dates to allow inclusion of new programs and courses in the budgeting process. One department missed the deadline and they are being required to resubmit during the next academic year. The FY 2010 calendar will be published in the first week of September.

The college will allocate competitive assistantships in a manner that allows each program to recruit the quality and quantity of graduate students necessary to offer a viable graduate program.

The college will produce a TA report that includes the percentage of full time graduate students who are receiving assistantships in COAS

30% of all full time graduate students will receive assistantships from COAS

Graduate Teaching Assistant Report
The objective was not met, however additional funding for TA positions may be forthcoming in the next fiscal year.


Action
TAs
Funding models for Teaching Assistantships will be developed and presented to the Dean of Graduate Studies and the Provost's office. The objective for the next fiscal year will be to increase by 10 the number of assistantships in the College of Sciences.



Update to previous cycle's plan for continuous improvement

Plan for continuous improvement The Dean's Office will continue to fund travel but will assess how effective this use of funds is.  Additionally the college will work with Graduate Studies to develop marketing and recruitment materials for the graduate programs. The Dean will closely monitor the new faculty hired without a terminal degree to ensure they are working towards the degree at an appropriate pace.
