Mathematics And Statistics Center

Goal
Tutoring In Mathematics And Statistics

Objective
The Department Will Continue To Maintain A Tutoring Lab For Mathematics And Statistics.
Tutoring will be provided for students taking mathematics or statistics courses at SHSU.

Indicator
Lab Utilization
A log book will be kept in the tutoring lab as a record of students attending the tutoring center.

Criterion
Utilization target
At least 10 students per day will visit the tutoring center during the academic year.

Finding
Students Served.
During the 2008-2009 academic year, the Mathematics and Statistics Center was open 109days and served 1062 students, for an average of 9.74 students per day.

Action
Future Plans
The Center did not meet its stated goal. This was due, in part to lack of funds for tutors during the spring semester. This caused us to cut back on our service hours.

We hope for an increase in Center funding for the upcoming year so that we can increase the hours of availability in 2009-2010.

Update to previous cycle's plan for continuous improvement

Plan for continuous improvement The Mathematics and Statistics Center met its goal to serve SHSU students in need of tutoring in mathematics or statistics. However, simple count data does not provide sufficient evidence of effectiveness. A proxy for effectiveness is the success rate of students in developmental math courses and entry level mathematics courses. In 2009-2010 The Mathematics and Statistics Center will have a faculty member serving as a director who will oversee the development of direct measures of effectiveness.
