Provide resources and support to increase ELI enrollment, which will eventually increase international enrollment at the University.
Objective
Increasing Enrollment
Through the development of a website, brochure and other forms of marketing, the ELI will increase awareness of its presence in the international market for ESL/EFL programs.
Indicator
Applications
Students indicate their interest in the ELI by submitting their applications.
Criterion
ELI enrollment
Increase enrollment in the program through recruitment.
Finding
Applications received for academic year 2008
The ELI received 74 applications from potential students for academic year 2008.
Indicator
Email Queries
Emails from potential ELI applicants can indicate success of outreach efforts.
Criterion
Amount of emails from potential applicants
The number of potential students who email us for information shows how successful our various recruiting efforts are.
Finding
Email queries from potential students
Due to a change in personnel in the middle of 2008, it is difficult to give an accurate number of email queries since the former ELI coordinator has not forwarded the previous email queries during the spring. During the summer and fall of 2008, 56 people emailed us for information about our English language training.
Indicator
ELI Enrollment Changes
The change in total ELI enrollment from one year to the next shows whether or not the email queries and applications are resulting in increased enrollment in the program.
Criterion
Changes in ELI enrollment
The total difference, either increase or decrease, in the number of students enrolled from one fall semester to the next.
Finding
Changes in ELI enrollment from Fall 2007 to Fall 2008
During Fall 2007, there were 21 students enrolled in ELI classes. During Fall 2008, 23 students enrolled in ELI classes, an increase of 10%.
Action
Additions to website
Over the next year, the ELI will enlist the help of the computer services department to develop new features to the website, including student testimonials, online application and a question/comment form.
Action
Recruitment at international fairs
We will attempt to increase our email queries and applications through making new potential student contacts at international fairs, either in person or using a recruiter.
Goal
Enhance Academic Quality
Create an environment conducive to academic success. Develop new and improve existing ELI courses to help students integrate into academic programs at the University.
Objective
Measurement Of Students' Success
Success may be measured by the students' academic performance in collegiate level courses.
Indicator
TOEFL Scores
Scores from the TOEFL taken by students several times a year.
Criterion
Score improvement
The ELI administers regular examinations of the Institutional Testing Program for admission requirements and assessment of students. The average amount of improvement on these test scores for students taking the exam multiple times is a good measure of their English language acquisition.
Finding
TOEFL score results
During the period from March 2008 to February 2009, 14 ELI students took the Institutional Testing Program provided by the University for TOEFL admission requirements more than one time. These 14 students increased their scores an average of 21 points from their first test to their last test.
Indicator
ELI Graduates' SHSU GPA
The department is researching how well former ELI students have performed in collegiate level classes compared to their classmates. This will give an indication of how successfully the ELI has prepared students for academic coursework.
Criterion
ELI graduatess' cumulative GPA at SHSU
The performance of former ELI students at the Unviersity can be measured by their cumulative GPA during the previous year.
Finding
ELI graduates' GPA at SHSU
In 2008, 31 former ELI students took academic courses at the University. The average cumulative GPA for these students was 3.1, which shows that ELI students come out of the program with the skills necessary to succeed at the University.
Action
Pre-admission student advising
When ELI students score high enough on the TOEFL to take academic courses at the University, we will arrange for them to receive academic advising prior to admission. This should better prepare them for the transition to their degree programs.
Action
TOEFL Tutoring Through Reading Center
For students who need extra help with TOEFL preparation, we will promote TOEFL tutoring through the Reading Center. This should increase scores for next year's assessment.
