Art (Gaddis Geeslin Gallery)

Goal
Gallery Mission
The Gaddis Geeslin Gallery strives to be the cornerstone of the Visual Art Department, and an accessible and vital
contemporary arts venue for the University and the Huntsville community. The Gaddis Geeslin Gallery is working to creating a solid identity and higher public profile to increase faculty, student, and community interest and involvement. The gallery stages several exhibitions, sponsors visiting artists, supports student exhibitions and promotes departmental social life with film society.

Objective
Gallery Promotion
The gallery will increase visibility by posting new signage on housing. It will promote exhibition awareness with graphically unified advertisement, postcard, flyer, and banner distribution.

Indicator
Gallery Promotion
The gallery's promotion will be measured in number of banners, flyers, size of mailing list, number of website hits, and times mentioned in other media (newspapers, magazines, radio, online).

Th gallery produce promotional materials (postcards, flyers, banners, website) to increase awareness of activities.

Criteria Met But Improvement Needed
The gallery met the criteria of producing promotional material. The content of the material needs to be improved. Specifically, the dates of exhibitions and events need to be clearly stated on the art department website. The flyers should list the nature of and artists included in exhibitions.

Action
Improve Gallery Promotion And PR Material
Consider using Constant Contact to promote exhibitions through email. Put an exhibition schedule with specific information on the department website. Distribute timely and informative press releases.

To host, curate, and stage visitng artists, faculty, and student exhibitions in the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery and the SOFA Space featuring work of every media.

The Gallery should bring more visiting artists to speak about their work in the Art Department. The lectures should be widely and actively advertised to students and the community.

The gallery will provide exhibition, curatorial, and work opportunities for art students with gallery staff positions, juried exhibitions, and open calls for student sponsored and staged exhibtions in the SOFA Space.

The gallery will provide weekly slots in the SOFA Space for up to twelve student exhibitions, stage two graduating senior exhibitions, and host one juried student exhibition.The gallery will track success in the number of exhibtions and total number of gallery visitations per semester.

SOFA And Sr. Shows
The SOFA gallery exhibited 20 shows by students that were organized by the Student Art Association.
The Gaddis Geeslin Gallery exhibited works by graduating seniors at the end of each semester and the juried student show in Spring 2009.

Continue To Emphasize Student Participation
The Gaddis Geeslin Gallery will continue to train students in Gallery practices by hiring student workers to assist in the gallery. The Student exhibitions will continue.

The gallery website is an online archive that will promote the gallery's activities, arcive exhibtions, and events, and serve as an online community.

The gallery will maintain an online blog for the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery, SOFA Space, and Film Society.The gallery will track the number of hits on the website and record participation of online surveys.rattendance and total number of gallery visitations per semester.

The gallery will maintain an online blog for the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery, SOFA Space, and Film Society. It will increase number of links and create an email list for gallery news and updates.

Finding
Web Presence Is Weak
The online gallery/blog was interesting for a while, but has become stagnant. It has not served as an online community. It has not been effective in disseminating accurate information concerning dates of openings and exhibitions. It has been an effective archive of past exhibitions.

Action
Improve Gallery Website
Continue the blog as an archive. Seek new ways of spreading information regarding exhibitions and visiting artists. Strive for more community involvement.


Update to previous cycle's plan for continuous improvement

Plan for continuous improvement The Gaddis Geeslin Gallery has hosted quality exhibitions by artists from throughout the United States as well as SHSU students and faculty. Attendance by members of the community the broader University seems to have decreased. The Art Department will reevaluate its PR for the gallery and try to increase its visibility, and increase attendance at exhibitions.
