Art BFA (Studio Art)

Goal
Provide A Quality Professional Degree Program In Studio Art
The BFA in Studio art will be a professional degree program in which students will acquire the skills and knowledge required to pursue a career as a fine artist and/or a Master of Fine Arts Degree at the graduate level.

Objective
Foundation Skills
Students will learn the basic skills of Drawing, the principles of 2 Dimensional and 3 Dimensional Design, and gain a Basic understanding and awareness of contemporary art.

Indicator
BFA Review
The BFA portfolio review will assess student work at the completion of the six foundation art classes: Art 161, Art 163, Art 164, Art 265, Art 271, and Art 260.

The assessment will evaluate the students use of materials, ability to express a concept visually, the use of line, shape, color and form in 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional space, and the ability to compose these elements in a successful drawing, painting, sculpture and digital media,

The faculty reviewers will use the criteria in the attached document to evaluate the student work.

Criterion
Passing The Review
It is expected that at least 75% of students will successfully complete the BFA review.

Finding
Unsatisfactory
48 students participated in the BFA review in 2008-2009. 58% passed. Faculty comments indicate that many of the students failed because of the inability to visually communicate a concept and that the content of the work was generally weak.
This is the first year that passage of the BFA review is being required for students to declare a major. Some students are taking at the appropriate time in their academic career, others will be graduating the semester of their review.
This is also the first year that the W.A.S.H program is replacing 2D and 3D design. When students who have participated in the W.A.S.H. program come through the BFA review, the percentage of students passing is expected to increase.

Indicator
Course Completion
The WASH program will have rigorous requirements of students in terms of art making and aesthetic understanding. Successful completion of the 9 hour block will indicate a student's desire and ability to pursue the BFA.

Criterion
3.0 Average
One of the purposes of the WASH program is to improve the quality of the BFA students. It is expected that the rigor of the program will cause some students to reassess their desire to continue the BFA. A 3.0 average in art courses is required for admission to the BFA program. It is expected that at least 60% of the students in WASH will receive an 3.0 average in the 9 hour block.

Finding
First Year Wash Grades
78 of students completed the WASH program in the first year of it's existence (2008-2009).
77% received an average grade of 3.0 (B) or higher.

Action
Develop Criteria
The BFA review committee will refine the criteria used to assess the student portfolio.
This criteria will be shared with faculty in the foundation courses, particularly the Drawing courses.
Students wishing to pursue the BFA will continue to be enrolled in the W.A.S.H. program.
The students who completed the WASH program should complete the BFA review at the end of the Spring 2010, or beginning of Fall 2011. It is expected that the number students passing the review will increase and the numbers should be close the 77% that received a B or better in the WASH program.

Objective
Students Will Demonstrate Expertise In Artistic Expression
At the conclusion of the program, students will demonstrate expertise in the creation of art in a variety of media and produce a cohesive body of work.

Indicator
Senior Exhibition
Graduating seniors are required to publicly exhibit work before the BFA degree is granted.

Criterion
Faculty Review
Currently there is an informal review by faculty, but no specific criteria.

Finding
Faculty Review
Without specific criterion agreed upon by faculty members and distributed to students prior to the exhibition, it is impossible to draw formal, data driven conclusions.

Action
Develop An Assessment Plan
Studio faculty will develop criteria for the Senior Exhibition and make this information available to student prior to the semester of the exhibition. Faculty will review student exhibitions and assess the learning outcomes of the upper level studio art classes through this evaluation. The venue for assessment is established, but the department will formalize the evaluation criterion.

Objective
W.A.S.H Program
The WASH (Workshop in Art Studio and Practice) will replace ART 161, 265, and 271 as foundation courses. Students will be immersed in a 9 hour block of courses that will emphasis expression in 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional forms using contemporary art and theory as a model. The program will consist of 6 hours of studio credit and 3 hours lecture.

Indicator
Course Completion
The WASH program will have rigorous requirements of students in terms of art making and aesthetic understanding. Successful completion of the 9 hour block will indicate a student's desire and ability to pursue the BFA.

Criterion

One of the purposes of the WASH program is to improve the quality of the BFA students. It is expected that the rigor of the program will cause some students to reassess their desire to continue the BFA. A 3.0 average in art courses is required for admission to the BFA program. Finding

77% received an average grade of 3.0 (B) or higher.

Action
Continue The WASH Program
The WASH program will be continued and supported. A new building specifically for WASH is planned for occupation in Fall 2010. The curriculum will be modified based on student and instructor feedback. Since the program is still in its developmental stages, these annual curriculum modifications will continue to be intstrumental.

Goal
Provide Foundation Courses For Other Disciplines In The Art Department
The curriculum of the BFA in Studio art will provide foundation courses that will shared with the other BFA programs in the Art Department: Graphic Design, Computer Animation, and Photography

Update to previous cycle's plan for continuous improvement

Plan for continuous improvement The BFA in Studio Art shares it's foundation courses for the BFA's in Graphic Design, Computer Animation and Photography. These courses are meant to provide students in all of the disciplines the basic skills and knowledge needed to succeed. The Art Department has initiated a new Foundation Program this year that is rigorous and designed to teach contemporary concepts and techniques at the beginning of the students' academic career. A BFA portfolio review has been instituted to assess the quality of the foundation program and the students seeking to advance in the curriculum. The Art Department expects to see a marked increase in the number of students passing the BFA review when the students who have completed WASH pass through. It is also expected that there will be a measurable improvement in the quality of the student work.
