Counseling Education MA

Goal
Improve Critical Thinking In Counseling
Students in the Counseling Education MA program will demonstrate critial thinking in counseling research.

Objective
Graduates Will Demonstrate Knowledge Of Current Counseling Literature And Be Competent In Conducting Research In The Field Of Counseling.
Student's will demonstrate skills in conducting current literature reviews in the field of counseling. Based on the results of the literature review students will prepare a well develop thesis topic and demonstrate competency in conducting research. The thesis will be evaluated using the Research Project Grading Rubric.

Indicator
Students In The Counseling Education MA Will Complete A Scholarly Thesis.
Students in the Counseling Education MA will complete a scholarly thesis and be prepared to complete a dissertation required for a doctoral degree in Counseling Education. Students will score at 80% or above on the thesis using the Research Project Grading Rubric.

Criterion
Students will select the MA Counseling Education Track.
Students seeking an MA degree who plan to pursue a doctorate in Counselor Education will select to complete a thesis as preparation for the dissertation and will enroll in the Counseling Education track.

Finding
No students in the Counseling Education MA degree track.
Currently there are no students enrolled in the Counseling Education MA degree track requiring the completion of a scholarly literature review and thesis research project.

Action
Advertise the Counseling Education MA to prospective students.
More focus will be placed on recruiting students for the Counseling Education MA degree. In an effort to encourage student seeking an MA degree interested in continuing toward earning a doctoral degree, the counseling program coordinator will recruit with the Director of the Doctoral Program to try to provide a "seamless" approach for students to earn an MA and PhD.

Collect, evaluate and integrate feedback about program improvement from stakeholder groups.

Feedback will be collected from members of the Counseling program advisory board. Counseling faculty will integrate the suggestions made by the advisory board members to align the learning expereinces and learning outcomes of our students with the curent trends in the field of counseling. In addition, feedback collected from employers of graduates and graduates will be considered for intergration in the program curriculum and learning experiences of students to improve the preparedness of our graduates to be gainfully employed as counselors in the community.

Members of the College of Education Recruitment committee share the thesis option MA in Counseling Educationg potential applicants to the counseling program.

Implement the suggests offered by members of the advisory committee for the counseling program to advertise more aggressively the Counseling ED/MA to students planning to eventually enroll in a counselor education doctoral program.

Recruit students interesting in selecting the Counseling Ed MA track who are interested in writing a thesis as preparation for a doctoral dissertation.

Students will be enrolled in the Counseling Education MA option for the master's degree in counseling. Currently there are no students in the MA counseling program who have selected Counseling Education which requires completion of a thesis project.

Continue to focus efforts to market the Counseling ED/MA program at recruitment events, conferences, workshops and presentations make by counseling faculty.


Update to previous cycle's plan for continuous improvement

Plan for continuous improvement There are currently no students in the Counseling Education MA program. This program requires a thesis and provides an excellent learning experience for students wanting to earn a Ph.D. in Counseling Education. To try to promote this program, counseling faculty will consult with SHSU's marketing director for advertise and recruitment strategies. The counseling program coordinator will survey CACREP accreditated counseling program to determine how many universities offer a track for student with a thesis requirement and what suggestions these univesity faculty may offer as strategies to attract students to a MA program with a thesis outcome project.
