Dance BFA

Goal
Deliver A Curriculum With Appropriate Discipline Specific Skill Sets
The curriculum will provide students with opportunities to develop the skills typically required of professionals in dance.

Objective
Dance Majors Will Demonstrate Proficiency In Ballet Technique
During a juried presentation of ballet class technique, the student's proficiency will be evaluated relative to: alignment; use of turnout; port de bras; performance in adagio, turns, jumps; musicality; and coordination.

Action
Review Promotion Process Through Levels Of Ballet Technique
Because students typically enroll in courses for the next semester well before jury results for the current semester are posted, students will be advised into the same level of technique for the next semester. If they are then promoted (or demoted) based on the jury, a new departmental approval will be processed reflecting that promotion.

Objective
Dance BFA Candidates Will Demonstrate Proficiency In Choreography
At the end of the sophomore year/beginning of the junior year, BFA candidates are assigned a mentor from the dance faculty to create and prepare a solo to be performed and adjudicated by the full dance faculty. Student's technique, performance qualities, and choreographic skills are assessed, relevant to student's potential for successful and timely completion of the BFA curriculum.

Action
Assess Effectiveness Of The Junior Barrier
The dance faculty will discuss whether the process is effective in identifying students who should remain in the BFA program, or whether the junior barrier needs to be revamped, either refining the process or finding a different method for evaluating the student's progress.

Update to previous cycle's plan for continuous improvement

Plan for continuous improvement Although the dance program has long used juries, the rigor and content of the juries and junior barrier need to be examined to see if they are in fact effective and appropriate.
