Clinical Psychology PhD

Goal
APA Accreditation
Maintain APA accreditation

Objective
Maintain APA Accreditation
This program will maintain APA accreditation by assembling all paperwork, submitting an annual report, and responding to all questions/requests from APA Committee on Accreditation (CoA).

Indicator
Submit Annual Report
Respond to most recent feedback by submitting to CoA responses to specific questions raised.

Criterion
APA accreditation
Complete program changes in response to APA feedback; specifically revise curriculum so that all students are exposed to both the cognitive and affective basis of behavior.

Finding
APA accreditation
APA suggested that the Emotions course be expanded to include material on cognitive basis of behavior.

Action
APA Accreditation Actions
Post accreditation question responses submitted to CoA in September 2008. Response will require a slight change in our core requirements regarding cognitive and affective bases of behavior. The Emotions course will be expanded to cover required cognitive elements.

Goal
Application Of Clinical Psychology To The Legal System
To provide opportunities for researching and applying clinical psychology to the legal arena.

Objective
Application: Students Will Apply Psychology To The Legal Arena
Students must be able to use their clinical skills in providing service to the legal arena.

Indicator
Demonstration Of Legal Knowledge
Effective demonstration of legal knowledge in clinical practice by participating with a Forensic Psychologist in forensic evaluations.

Criterion
Forensic Evaluation
All students will participate in a forensic evaluation with the Director of Clinical Training.

Finding
Forensic Evaluations Completed
100% of graduates and 2008 internship applicants have participated in more than one forensic evaluation deemed to be appropriate for student's level in program.

Action
Application Actions
Continue with current process and expand the program by incorporating other faculty in forensic evaluations.

Goal
Effective Teaching
Faculty demonstrate high levels of teaching effectiveness.

Objective
Providing Effective Undergraduate Classroom Instruction
Students assigned as Teaching Assistants will demonstrate skills necessary to provide quality educational experiences for undergraduates.

Indicator
Student Teaching
Ratings of teaching effectiveness.

Criterion
Teaching ratings of graduate students
IDEA ratings of TAs will be above average.

Finding
Graduate student teaching ratings
90% of Mean ratings of graduate student teaching effectiveness was above the department and University Mean.

Action
Effective Teaching Actions
Continue present system of selecting and monitoring Teaching Assistants. However, we continue to be concerned about the 10% who do not exceed expectations. Therefore, all new Teaching Assistants will be required to attend the College's Teaching Conference and will be evaluated mid-semester by the Department Chair. A PACE Center referral will be made for those having recurring problems.

Goal
Effective Clinical Practice
To produce graduates who have the knowledge and skills to excel in the practice of clinical psychology.

Objective
Acquire The Skills And Ability To Practice Clinical Psychology
Students must demonstrate skills in service delivery in broad and general clinical areas.

Indicator
Effective Clinical Practice
Effective use of assessment, treatment planning, intervention, consultation, and supervision strategies.

Criterion
Supervisor evaluation
Supervisor ratings of clinician performance. On a 5-point likert scale, 90% will be rated at greater than 3. With respect to the likert scale: 1-2 signifies failing performance; 3 signifies passing performance; 4 signifies excellent performance; 5 signifies professional performance.

Finding
Supervisor ratings of performance
All students making application for internship in 2008 were rated competent in critical areas.

Action
Effective Clinical Practice Actions
Continue current system of supervisor ratings assessing student clinical competencies and configure comprehensive exams to assess clinical competencies. Refine the current Capstone course to assure that all students are certified as clinically competent before proceeding to doctoral level practicum. We will continue to monitor each student's clinical competence every semester by a clinical faculty review chaired by the Director of Clinical Training and including each person who has supervised the student's work during the semester.

Goal
Students Will Be Knowledgeable In The Core Domains Of Scientific Psychology
To produce graduates who have a broad knowledge of scientific psychology including its history of thought and development, research methods, and applications.

Objective
Students Will Demonstrate Broad And General Knowledge Of General Psychology At The Graduate Level
Students will successfully complete course work required for licensure in the field of psychology.

Indicator
Academic Coursework Completion
Student will successfully complete all Academic course work.

Criterion
Course Performance Assessment
On a 5-point likert scale, all students will achieve a performance level of 4-5 as rated by instructors in all courses. Two performance scores below 4 for any particular student will result in the student's dismissal from the program. On the likert scale, 4 denotes acceptable performance; 5 denotes excellent performance; 1-3 denote unacceptable performance.

Finding
Student course performance
During the academic year 2008-2009, two students had a performance assessments at the "3" level on the likert scale. The remaining students all scored at the 4 or 5 level.

Action
Knowledge of core domain actions
Continue enforcement of this policy. Each student receiving a performance rating below at or below 3 on a 5-point likert scale will be reviewed by the program faculty. A remediation plan will be constructed if appropriate.

Goal
Students Will Conduct Empirical Research
To produce graduates with the skills to conduct meaningful research that adds to the current body of knowledge in psychology.

Objective
Students Will Be Able To Evaluate And Conduct Psychological Research
Students will learn strategies for reviewing research and designing independent research projects.

Indicator
Competent Literature Reviews
Students will demonstrate the ability to conduct competent reviews of the scientific literature and complete research which is subject to peer review.

Criterion
Research materials accepted for publication or presentation
At least 50% of the current cohort beyond their first year will have materials accepted for publication or presentation at a national conference.

Finding
Second year students research
Currently 84% of students second year and beyond who are currently enrolled have at least one publication or presentation at a national conference.

Action
Empirical Research Actions
Pursue additional funding to underwrite student research including incentive awards. In an effort to raise the percentage higher, the initial student orientation will include an introduction to on-going faculty research and invitations will be made to students to join research teams. Efforts will be made to fund students who enter the program at the BA/BS level as Research Assistants.

Update to previous cycle's plan for continuous improvement

Plan for continuous improvement With respect to APA accreditation, we expect our actions will ensure APA accreditation will be maintained through our site visit in 2011.

Our actions of incorporating additional faculty in forensic evaluations should ensure 100% of our graduate students will continue to have the opportunity to participate in forensic evaluations.

Our actions in regard to monitoring, mandating attendance at the annual teaching conference and making PACE referrals as appropriate should serve to improve even further the teaching ratings of our graduate students.

Continued monitoring of our student clinicians, along with refinement of our Capstone course, should ensure that Practicum students provide competent psychological services to their clients.

The establishment of a system of remediation plans should ensure that all students can demonstrate adequate knowledge of the core areas of Psychology.

Greater emphasis on the research process from the students entry into the program, as well as providing additional funding for research endeavors, should further increase our research productivity.
